Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Mumbai to Ahmedabad Sion and Niki Well, the "City of Dust' certainly lives up to its name, its hot, dusty, frantic....but very friendly. They obviously don't get many tourists in Gujarat because everyone wants to meet us, shake our hands and follow us around town...you can't shake them off! We even had two little school boys ask for our autographs today. Its very flattering, but a bit exhausting saying hello to every man, woman, child, cow, donkey, camel and rabid dog on the street. But, beware not to let your guard down too [View Full Entry]

When arriving in Baroda, state of Gujarat, we had a bizarre experience right off the bat. While checking in at the hole-in-the-wall hotel office, Randy and the hotel manager were interrupted by a “sadhu” (holy man in search of enlightenment). He was draped a long orange robe and dangling gold jewelry, with a painted face and wild hair. Exactly what happened next remains a mystery since they were speaking in a foreign language, but it went something like this: Sadhu insists manager look through album of naked-sadhu-in-desert photos. Manager protests that he’s busy [View Full Entry]

Palitana Curiosity is what drives me. I hope it does not kill me some day like it did the cat. That is why we were ascending the Shatrunjay hill near Palitana in the state of Gujrat, in the morning sunlight and getting tired, thirsty and footsore. Devotion was not driving us because we are Hindus and the shrines at Palitana are Jain. (When I visited Badrinath and Kedarnath in the Himalayas, which are Hindu shrines, there also the driving force was curiosity rather than devotion. Somehow, devotion is lacking in my makeup in Toto, though Avi is somew [View Full Entry]

We have been here almost 3 weeks, just now getting used to Ahmedabadi life, and now we're getting ready to move on! It will be hard to leave the family that has now become so familiar. We have, over the weeks, continued to spend time with them and occassionally undertake tourist activities. Yesterday was very significant for me - we went back in time, to my dad's youth. We spent a few hours at his old engineering college at Gujarat University and then went to the crazy downtown for a tour of the flat where he grew up. It was unbelievable [View Full Entry]

Hi! We're having a good time still. We took an adventurous jaunt to Politana, and stayed in a Dharmasala along the way, which is like a Jain monastery. We saw so many temples and we climbed the whole 3200 steps! Our legs are still sore. :) CHeck out the pics. [View Full Entry]

We're in a world of spice! Asia » India » Gujarat » Ahmedabad
Hi, friends! Paul and I are in India! We are having a fabulous time. My experience so far has been rich and my senses are near saturation with all the newness. The first thing I notice is the smells. Immediately when our plane landed in Mumbai, I smelt the air and said "This is what India smells like - I remember!" I don't know how to describe it. It's just that there are so many flowers and spices in the air - even in the city - and maybe because the weather is different - I don't know, but it smells [View Full Entry]

Dwanil on Dholak

scene from auto rickshaw

We departed Udaipur and after a relatively painless daytime bus trip south, we were soon struggling through the hot and dusty streets of Ahmedabad, trying to find some habitable accommodation. This was our penultimate stop before getting to Mumbai and for Thailand in a few days time. First stop was the city museum, a ‘must see’ according the guide book, but when the rickshaw driver had no idea where it was, nor many of the people he asked for directions we started to get suspicious. When we finally found it, it appeared to be a deserted multistory car-park, but to [View Full Entry]

Our goal in India, for this week is to get to Ajanta Caves from Udaipur. If you've read my last blog, I expressed frustration to the fact that every train for weeks anywhere we want to go is 100% fully booked with no chance of getting on. Frusterated, we tried to change our flight to leave India early, but are finding it impossible to get ahold of Thai Airways in Mumbai, they seemd to change every phone number they have. **shrug** About a week ago we were able to get an overpriced train ticket on the black market from Ahmedabad to [View Full Entry]

Outside the caves

Ok, this one is for the architects, some of you may find this a little boring but finally I found some interesting buildings of international recognition (please note I am yet to visit the Taj), in the strangest most unexpected city as well. But before we get into the architecture talk, let's just recount the journey to our current destination, Ahmedabad. A grueling 16 and a half bus journey, and mind you not via highway, but the ‘short cut’ being the back end of no-where on a road that doesn’t even class as a dirt track. Now the buses we’ve been [View Full Entry]

Rituals of Aaryas Asia » India » Gujarat » Dhansura
I had The wonderful fortune to be invited to yet another family celebration in performing the second ritual of Aaryas of the 16 rituals in all. This took place in a small town, however, still busy and bussling with people going about their daily lives. The town of Dhansura came alive with an influx of population of the Kutch-Kadava Patel Caste to perform the second ritual of the Blessing of the Feotus. We were bestowed by the presence and pravashan (similar to a lecture or sermon) by Swamiji of the Vanprastha Aashram - Gujurat. Although I did not understand Gujurati, I [View Full Entry]
