Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Palolem Asia » India » Goa » Palolem
Danes koncujem s Palolemom.

Konec duhovnega potovanja  Asia » India » Goa » Palolem
No spet sem na poti in grem naprej! Sem hotel it na [View Full Entry]

Goa - daljna in sanjska Asia » India » Goa » Anjuna Beach
No takole. Novo leto sva prezivela. Ogromno ljudi, tujcev in domacinov, vse ceste so bile zabasane. In to ni edini primer.

Palolem Asia » India » Goa » Palolem
Still heading South towards Karnataka on the way to Kerala - which at some point - given that I don't fall in love with a place and a girl at the same time means I will head back to Delhi to catch my plane to Bangkok. The beaches are beautiful here - the crescent shaped beach of Palolem where yesterday morning the moon was sitting on its side and smiling with Venus directly above was magical - one of many magical things I am struggling to write down without losing the experiencial side of it. Anjuna Asia » India » Goa » Anjuna Beach
It was a huge sleeper bus and quite ideal for us in the circumstances. The trip flew by and we settled for the next few days in Anjuna. We took in the Market in Anjuna which had traders from all over India and tourists from all over Europe it seemed. Settling at the Guru bar near the beach for a few days was a great way to get away from it all. [View Full Entry]

boons ark
boons ark
our home for 23 days
Had breakfast-yummy porridge. Got taxi to vagator. Could not really find where we wanted to stay, so looked at Boons Ark- fab cottage style room- immaculate and lovely grounds for Rs300.. we think!! Completley unpacked (glorious!) and had a wander- we like vagator; lots of bars and restaurants- a reasonable beach surrounded by rocks. Had lunch at a cafe on the beach- hummus and falafel. St chatting to an indian lad who works/smokes there!! Sent emails. Went to Willy at night; very good spagehtti. Had a few beers at tin tins / jaws. Cool storm in the distance; no rain seen [View Full Entry]

2001………..6wks-2nd CYCLING TRIP-2,200kms IN SOUTHERN INDIA 9.10.01 Maravanthe (33.15km) I spent the day recuperating at the overpriced Turtle Beach Resort. They normally want 55rp, a bit over $20, for a timber hut without attached bathroom. I'm paying 25rp. My bartering was easy- I'm the only tourist here. The last one was 5 wks ago. There's been a smattering of local tourists, but with it being off season for beaches and the in-season for terrorism, they can't be making much money. But talk about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. My hut is on stilts over-looking a nice [View Full Entry]

First impressions Asia » India » Goa » Colva
Some first impressions of India: The men seem to be raised to be aggressive at times and also openly leacherous. Women always wear something flowing and conservative with sandals. Each looks like a princess to me. Beautiful, thick black hair, dark skin and those royal, colorful clothes! But men dress quite Western. Everyone always likes to be in a crowd. This is the only place I've ever seen people standing around at the beach, fully clothed in large groups. Whether in or out of the water! As a single white woman, I'm never alone for long before some guy invites himself [View Full Entry]
