Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

One last beach Asia » India » Goa » Palolem
Having made a final, last minute decision to go to one last beach before the end of our trip we took three hot sticky buses from Panjim to a tiny beach town called Palolem. Palolem isnt meant to be one of the most idyllic beaches in Goa due to it being a little too discovered by tourists, however now that we are in May it is classed as 'out-of-season' for this part of the country so when we arrived it was quiet enough to be blissful but still busy enough that some restaurants and guesthouses remained open. Needless to say we [View Full Entry]

Panaji and Old Goa Asia » India » Goa » Panaji
We had to make a stop in Mumbai on our way south to Goa. We just spent one night here before heading off as we fly home from Mumbai so will be returning to do some sightseeing. We had some problems finding affordable accomodation, one place we looked had about 30 beds crammed into a dark grubby room with half naked, sweaty Indian men lying on them. No thanks! We did eventually find somewhere that was acceptable. The area we were staying in reminded us a lot of London. Many of the bulidings here were built by the British during their [View Full Entry]

After Chrissie's few days of sickness and the accompanying requirement to stay in the hotel room, it felt fantastic to get to Goa, with its beaches and wide open spaces. We spent 8 days in Goa, but for 6 of these we, to all intents and purposes, did exactly the same thing - relaxed at the beach. India is so hot, busy and hectic, that it was wonderful to get to a couple of beach resorts and just kick back for a while. We visited two villages, called Anjuna and Arambol, the former for 2 days and the latter for 4. [View Full Entry]

Keralan adventures Asia » India » Goa
So ALOT has happened in the last two weeks since I wrote last. Juli and I have traveled to 5 different cities, had some incredible adventures, and helped me to accomplish one of my goals in India (The Keralan backwaters). We left Varkala a few days after the massive festival I wrote about. In the next days, we took a fishing boat out to sea with our German neighbor-dads, had some incredible conversations with people from around the world late into the evenings, as monsoon rains drenched the bamboo-hut-restaurants, and then graciously decided to leave the comfortable tourist-hole that is Vark [View Full Entry]

My love for Goa was not instant. I first visited the place back in Nov 2004 for my honeymoon. The packaged deal landed me at Calangute Beach with no information. It was over crowed and the fact that I had a motor bike accident on the second day did not help. I did spoil the honey part of the honeymoon. Decided to visit Goa with family that include a wife and three + years old son on April 10, 09. I had not planned for it in advance but thought of making a very good use of Good Friday. Did not [View Full Entry]

Back to Palolem Asia » India » Goa » Palolem
So having seen some North Goa we decided to head back to Palolem in the South. It is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in India and we think so. There is a good atmosphere here too and it's easy to get around. Our friends from Anjuna wanted to check out the beach too and will probably follow us down in a day or so. I decide to get some excercise in while I'm here so I rented a Kayak and paid for 5 days up front. I went out for my first paddle on our first morning [View Full Entry]

and the other side

Day 4 Wednesday was mainly wasted due to the night’s activities; we both woke up at 5pm. We decided to go of to Baga; which is the big touristy spot of Goa. The taxi dropped us all the way at the bottom on Baga beach, we went and found this lovely restaurant that was actually on the beach, it was all open aired under roofing, the tables and chairs being cleared away during the day, just being used as a bar area. The waiter came over and we ordered; I ordered a Goan fish curry and Sam ordered some kind of [View Full Entry]

the new look
the new look
maybe not but who knows..
One of the India women we got to know in Arambol said that her Dad ran a resteraunt and guest house in Anjuna and we should check it out so thats what we did. It looked grand so we stayed. It was right in the middle, both in the mddle of nowhere and everywhere. Anjuna is split in to the beach and the main road in town. We were in the middle, so we had to walk if we wanted to go anywhere but at least we could... Curlies is the place to be on Thursdays in Anjuna, we had an [View Full Entry]

Em and Chris go to India Delhi 8.5 hour flight from London Heathrow to Mumbai International Airport. After a 5 hour delay in Mumbai spent in the Jet Airways VIP Lounge drinking and eating what ever we wanted (which wasn’t much), we finally boarded our connecting 2 hour flight to Delhi. Karan met us at the airport with a car and driver he’d hired. 23 hours after leaving our ex-home at Hollybush St in London, we pulled into our new home for the next few weeks in Gurgaon, 1 hour south of central Delhi. After rounds of hugs and kisses we [View Full Entry]
