Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Oh man... I just experienced some true India. I decided to take a train up north to the state Goa. It was those night trains that take 14 hours to get to the place. I spoiled myself by buying some 'first class' tickets on the train. I was half expecting the rooms to be like clean and have a nice window. Hahaha, so wrong, Vic, so wrong. The only space I had was the size of an upper bunk bed with a curtain! Such a cramped space for such a long ride. Then it started pouring so hard (finally) and it [View Full Entry]

North Goa = lapping it up! Asia » India » Goa » Anjuna Beach
Hi everyone. Thomas here! VV is busy updating her CV for job stuff (I know I know, she never stops does she) so I have been elected as chief blog do-a-ra. Ok so for the last 6 days we have been in north Goa in a place called Anjuna. It’s basically a beach town famous for a Wednesday flee market on the beach and sun and sea and other beachy goings on. Because its been low season on our trip so far we have seen very few westerners but the first thing we noticed about this place is that its full [View Full Entry]

<Hampi> Arriving in Hospet early in the morning after our night on the sleeper train, we were immediately accosted by a tout doing his best to get us to go on a city tour in his Rickshaw. He was very persistent but in the end we let him take us to our hotel for a few rupees an told him we might call him later if we wanted a tour (we knew that we weren't going to, but it was the only way we could get rid of him). After a quick shower and change of cloths, we snuck out of [View Full Entry]

(written by Graham in an internet cafe, 12 hours before our flight to Thailand) We'll let the pictures do the talknig for this entry (partly because we didn't do much besides eat, drink, sunbathe and swim and partly because we're behind on blog entries so need to crank this one out quickly). In summary........ Palolem South Goa, lots of restaurants, nice, sparsley populated beach often shared with stray dogs and cows. Stayed 5 nights in total, sunset strolls aplenty. Food - great pizza and pasta at Magic Italy, great steak at Cool Breeze, awesome curried king prawns on the [View Full Entry]

Leaving mumbai was a bit sad after a night in a great hostel, even if we were sharing 3 beds all pushed together as it was the only room we could find at 11:30pm. A taxi to the hotel was definately a must as it was down a dark alley and up 3 flights of stairs all with people sleeping in the stairwells and voices rising from the dark corners pointing in the right direction, pretty funny but a bit wierd to find such a nice hotel in the middle of all that. Mumbai was a revelation after Varanasi which are [View Full Entry]

I can remember that all my schoolbooks still showed Goa as Portuguese when I was at school - they hadn't caught up with the 1961 Indian takeover. I'm staying in Fontainhas, one of the oldest parts of Panjim, which is the capital of Goa State and it still seems quite European in appearance. It is sometimes known as Goa's Latin Quarter. Most of the food is Indian in style but with lots of influence from the Portuguese which means that this is the only part of India where pork can be quite a speciality. I was hoping that some restaurants mght [View Full Entry]

Rest and reflection in Goa Asia » India » Goa » Palolem
This is how I'd imagined monsoon in Palolem! We are blessed with sunshine which stretches on for days, before the humidity builds and releases torrential downpours which reflect and revive. We get a fantastic deal on a penthouse apartment on the Palolem - Patnem road, just 5 mins walk through coconut groves to the beach. We are living in sparkling clean luxury complete satellite TV, internet connection, our own kitchen and huge, completely private sunbathing terrace. I take advantage of the seclusion with some serious tan line free sun worship! We go to market in Chaudi every few days for fres [View Full Entry]
