At Mapusa Market
Yesterday (Friday) we visited Mapusa Market, a once-a-week farmers’ market in the town of Mapusa, about 40 minutes away from our hotel. The same driver who ferried us to Panjim the day before, one Remmy Vaz, was waiting for us at 9.30am as promised.

Mapusa Market was amazing: colourful, noisy, vibrant, a little smelly in places (there were many stalls selling fish) and incredibly busy. We saw few other tourists and the market was mainly populated with Goans buying and selling their produce. We have never in our lives seen so many chillies in one place- there were mountains of them on some of the stalls. Spices were also a popular commodity with the brightly coloured powders piled high in hessian sacks.

A young girl who tried (successfully) to sell us some “silk” scarves told Kate she looked like an Indian Spice Girl and me that I looked like an Indian Barbie! When we told her that we were from England she kept saying “lovely jubbly” and “ASDA buy one get one free”. Quite an eye-opener to know that ASDA’s BOGOF is now what we are famous for in South Asia.

Mapusa, contrary to what our guidebook had told us, turned out to be quite a pretty little town. We explored some of the backstreets and, like Panjim, you felt that you could be in Portugal. The backstreets were quiet and breezy, a refreshing change to the chaotic, hot and sticky market in the square.

When we returned to the hotel we had a hour or so cooling off by the pool, a workout and a fabulous Indian meal at the Masala Restaurant. We had a great day and will definitely re-visit Mapusa when we return to Goa in the future.
