Bob Mehew: January 26th, 2007

Where obtained: Goa, India
Where read: On the beach
Thoughts: This book has a passably intriguing plot with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, but other than that has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Poorly written with appalingly weak dialogue and complete lack of character depth or analysis, there is no way I would have taken the time to finish it had I not arrived in Goa to find it sitting in the house I was renting. It was just too easy. I read it in just a few days and treated it as an antidote to the recent diet of either bleak or factual books. Very much beach reading that matched the surface atmosphere of Palolem, which is a load of holidaymakers and long stayers out for an easy relaxed time of it. The book is not thought provoking or intelligent in any way, but in the New Year period of 2008 this was just fine for me. Fortunately Palolem itself turned out to have more than just this surface and I enjoyed the remaining stay, engaging in challenging and rewarding activities that have been fascinating and somewhat surprisingly awakened o more holistic side in me.
