Day 3 – Hong Kong / Lantau Island - 5th Feb Another overcast day in Hong Kong; suppose I shouldn’t complain though, I mean it hasn’t rained yet. Eventually, I got off the MTR at Central and consulted the map as I was looking for the tram that climbs the peak for stunning views across Hong Kong; however I wasn’t too convinced that I would see anything. After consulting my map and more to the point directions from some helpful people, I made to the entrance of the Peak Tram. Boarded the tram and was thrown against the wooden seat as it climbed the 370 meters to the plateau at a crazy angle; apparently a 14 degree gradient. As I thought it would be, the further up towards the plateau we went the thicker the fog ... read more

The next day I got up early and took the MTR to meet Val at Tung Chung. I arrived a little early again and after waiting for a few minutes, I was in need of a restroom. The subway stations in Hong Kong made me a little crazy because there is no public restroom in the station. If you need to use the bathroom, and the station is next to a shopping center, you must go in there to look for the closest bathroom. I have a feeling this was done strategically to lure people into the shopping centers, and if you really got to go this is quite annoying. We took a bus to the Po Lin Monastery to see the Big Buddha. After arriving, we ate lunch at a restaurant in the touristy village ... read more

When I got off the bus I wasn’t sure where to go so I wandered for a while, I really liked the village because it was pretty quiet and peaceful. There were cows wandering around on the streets and yards. There were also quite a few dogs, which reminded me of Lijiang. At one point I was looking for a sign and looked up to see the famous Tian Tan Sitting Buddha. It is the largest sitting bronze Buddha in the world, it was very impressive. I followed some hard-to-see signs to finally arrive at my hostel. It is the same company as the first hostel I stayed at, but the conditions are much nicer. The place is much cleaner, and it is just me and an older man from the UK in one room, instead ... read more

Day 6 - 31st January 2010 - Disneyland Our day started really badly, couldn't get any cash out of the machines. After Ratko spending a lot of time trying to sort it out, seems the ANZ stuffed up our travel card, so playing the move money around game & paying lots of fees to do it! Half our day was spent trying to get money! Finally arrived at Disneyland at 12.30! It was a warm sunny day and it was packed! We saw the Festival of the Lion King, The Golden Mickeys & the Grand Parade which were all wonderful. Had a couple of nice meals, well, desserts! The fireworks were awesome, then we hit the sourvenir shops. At the beginning of the day I bought my mickey ears and wore them for all the photos, ... read more

Day Twenty-Seven - Have A Magical Day Leanne didn’t make it to her 7am swim such was the comfort of the beds. It was nice to wake up in high quality linen and even nicer to have breakfast with our own waitress pouring decent coffee into fine china. I could get used to the five star treatment. Next stop was the Disney shop in the lobby for a splurge. Thankfully, it wasn’t full of tat and was different to their stores here. The souvenirs were pretty good quality and the HK eponymous gifts ranged from the kitsch to the couture. Of course much of it is the usual with a slight Chinese twist so a fair bit of it ended up in the shopping basket. Leanne got herself an autograph book and soon set about getting ... read more

Day Twenty-Six - Speechless Giggling Gurls When the alarm went off at 3.15am it wasn’t welcomed in any way. We got up, woke the girls and checked out. A short walk over the Terminal and a straightforward check in was followed by some more ATM hoopla. Once sorted we got some much needed juice. Immigration was cleared quickly and after an hour in the departure lounge, we were brought forward to board. We walked out onto the apron where about six flights were boarding at once. People were confused despite being told which stand to board at and went in all directions. It was getting normal by now. Onboard they didn’t have our meal sorted, which was a bit annoying, but I don’t think we missed out on much. Once we landed and got through, we ... read more

This year we spent Christmas Day at Disneyland in Hong Kong. This was the year that I thought we were going to spend a week in December in Florida at Walt Disney World but a little change in our lives, like moving to China, kind of changed our plans. It was nice to be able to see Mickey and his friends for Christmas after all. The park was very nice and felt just like it should have being a part of Disney. Our first impression after walking down Main Street was “Is the castle a little small?” I have to say it was really like being in “Disney Lite” but was still a very enjoyable day and just as friendly and clean as we expect from Disney. We got there as they opened and rode Space ... read more

HO HO HO Merry Christmas from China!! It’s Christmas Day and I’m sitting on a beach under a palm tree. Jodie and I arrived on Langtau Island yesterday, which is one of the Hong Kong islands. It’s about 25 degrees today so I think it’s fair to say it’s the hottest Christmas I have ever experienced. Every one is walking about in shorts and t-shirts, it’s so surreal. I am also surrounded by mountains and there are lots of scary cows wandering about the streets. Just now there is a little Chinese man walking across the beach with a sack of crabs. He looks a bit like Santa, except he has crabs instead of coal and a dog instead of a reindeer. I’m having one of my Chinese moments where I just sit, look around and ... read more

Well, first of all a quick recap, I spent the weekend pretty much sleeping, eating and drinking with not much inbetween, so began to feel like a sloth. Friday was a bit of a struggle as I only had 3 hours sleep in the morning, spent the day with my dad which was nice, although we went to a pub for lunch - The Aviator, Tung Chung - it was terrible. We were in the place for about an hour before they came to give us a menu and even thenwe had to ask for it despite sitting down at a table! We managed to spend about 2 n a half hours there. Then went on to Sham Shui Po cause dad needs some bits of electronic equiptment for what ever he is building... I think ... read more
