Another quick trip to Hong Kong to apply for a new visa gave me the opportunity to visit Lantau island. There is a gigantic Buddha statue that you can hike up to. Of course I wasn't granted the sunshine of my other trips, so instead it was raining, cold and extremely foggy the closer I got to my destination. This, however, did not hold me back from taking pictures.... read more

If you don't feel you have one inside of yourself, or rarely venture there, monasteries and, the true temple of God, nature, these serve to lead us to the eye within ourselves, that is ever present amidst the storm that is the human mind as it is connected to the flurrying world. After many months in the storm of Shanghai, which at times I did and at times could not ride, I finally had a time to vacate, not only my body but my mind, from that cancerous city. I was so intent on getting to the metropolis of Hong Kong only to plunge into its national parks, its hills that rise o'er the ocean about, into relatively pristine oceanated skies. But on the crowded, stinky, 2nd class train down, my foot got nailed by some ... read more

My 2nd stay in HK. Have taken it easy, yesterday swam in Deep Water bay and today took the fast ferry to Discovery bay on Lantau, an upmarket ex-pat estate with a nice beach. Topped up the suntan. I'm in the 26 bed dormitory at the hostel. Thankfully there's only six others there and they're all quiet sleepers. It apparently fills up in the summer months. 26 sweaty blokes in one room, 30C and 95% humidity?! I definitely came at the right time of year. The sea temperature is 23C and it's around 26C by day and 18C at night. ... read more

It's the last full day of Chris and Roisin's stopover in Hong Kong. Come to think of it's the last full day of what has been a fantastic experience. The day started like the previous one - temperature in the 70s. Chris and Roisin have decided to visit Victoria Peak. It's taken Chris many months of persuasion to convince Roisin that she really wants to do this. As the evening will close at 8pm with the world famous laser symphony of lights across Victoria Harbour, it was pointless to go back to the hotel in between times so it was going to be a long day. One observation that Chris has noticed is that the Chinese like to join things onto other things! Every building seems to be joined to another building by either an underpass ... read more

For the first time in 5 weeks, Roisin and Chris both thought 'Well, this is it. It's time to go home' as Roisin did her stuff with the packing 3 suitcases worth of stuff in to 2. Ron was pleased that (one of) the possums came to visit. It turns out that there is a family of at least 3 possums so the two visits Chris and Roisin received could have been 2 totally different animals. I'm not sure why all three didn't visit in one sitting. Perhaps one of the possums is sent out to the humans for food. If so the possum or possums sat stuffing their tiny furry faces with banana that Chris and Roisin supplied in full view of them. The possum probably returned to the den where he told the others, ... read more

Day 8 - My week in hotel ended today. Packed up and moved to the youth hostel. What it lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for in the view. It's on top of Mt. Davis. Day 9 - Took the tram from Kennedy town to Shau Kei Wan, the full length of the line. Tried some street food, turned out to be battered assorted vegetables but there's no way of knowing until you take a bite. visited the museum of coastal defences (military) and took the bus to Shek O, a lovely seaside village but a hairy bus ride there, narrow windy mountain roads, flat out on a double decker bus!!! Day 10 - Another memorable journey, on a glass bottomed cable car to the worlds largest buddah, 34 metre high bronze figure, followed ... read more

We landed in Hong Kong at about 6am. We stashed our bags at the airport then headed out. First we took the subway into town. It was easy to figure out. It also happened to be rush hour, so that was an experience too. We stopped at a few stations and went up to street level to look around. We didn't have any maps, or any idea what we could go look at, so we didn't see anything in particular. The skyline in HK is amazing and the harbor view was great too. After our subway adventure we took the train back to Lantau island. We took a bus up the hill to see Po Lin monastery and Big Buddha. The bus turned out to be more of an adventure than we had imagined! The road ... read more
