Today has been largely uneventful, my sleeping pattern has become rather odd. The day I arrived, hadn't slept much before so had a long nap in the afternoon, yesterday I awoke at 06:53 and after a busy morning, I again had a long nap in the afternoon. This morning I woke up, looked at my phone and it was once again 06:53... groundhog day! ha! "and don't forget your booties - cause its cold outside!" well... its not cold, but I don't like being up at that time. In an attempt to change this pattern I needed to make sure I didn't npa thisafternoon, so, after a cup of coffee and some breakfast, and a couple of hours looking at Lonely Planets opinions of Philippines, I went back to bed. It was very comfee and nice ... read more

Day 2 in Hong Kong, After awaking at 06:55 - put that down to time difference not keeness! - I had a great cup of coffee, attempted to go back to bed but dad started talking to me, d'oh! I faffed around a bit for a few hours then decided to get into gear and start to work on getting visas for places down the line. I headed for the Philippean consulate in Admiral. I packed my satchel/man bag - oh which reminds me, in "The Hangover", my favorite part is when Alan gets abuse for a manpurse, and he tells them its a satchel, having myself described any kind of bag as a satchel for the last 26 years, it seems rather amusing... anyway.... so, I packed my satchel with essential things, like two copies ... read more

Day one. "and on the first day the lord said; "Let their be light"... and there was." This has been a very long day so far, but not for any bad reasons. It started as Saturday 31st of October, and will run untill tonight, Monday 2nd November. Saturday night was spent celebrating my leaving England to go travelling for 10 months, the night itself was good fun, but seeminly uneventful, which is probably a good thing. And, although we returned to my flat at 04:00ish, that wasn't the end of the day. I had to finalise my bag, and pack it as well as I could, which bearing in mind it was 04:00 Sunday morning, and we'd been drinking heavily, probably wasn't the best idea, and I'm sure a few things have been neglected. Once this ... read more

Well chapter two begins on the wednesday morning waking up in a bed far too small for one person let alone sharing it with the monster that is barry mcg. I horrible moment of realiastion that not only did it feel like my back ws broken but it also felt like i had slept fo roughly about 2 minutes all night. Anyways the groupe regrouped to discuss the antics and experience of the night before - this included an irish bar in which the majority of the guys ended up, chatting up some german girl, running to the safety of taxis with hands in their pockets to avoid those pesky prostitutes pick pocketing them - jamie burns encouraging everyone he'd be able to handle himself without their protection and Daly arriving into our room and panicing ... read more

Despite being longer than our flight out to Dubai, the fact we flew to Hong Kong at 9.40am and arrived and 9.40pm (local time) made the flight much more bearable. Duncan (old friend from Uni - a Canadian whos family moved out here 11 years ago) took us back to his flat. On the way I was struck by how, in contrast with shiny new Dubai, how old and battered some of Hong Kong looked. Im sure he wouldn begrudge me saying that Duncans flat is very much a Boy Flat, geared towards long periods of computer gaming (both of his flat mates are also game addicts) and the contrast between this and our lodgings with Cam in Dubai was pretty startling. The next day after a considerable lie-in, Duncan took us out of the city ... read more

The first impression of Hong Kong is of concrete scraping the hazy sky and hazy revellers scraping the concrete pavements. Then you’re taken to the “other side” of the islands where you’re amazed that such exotic beachy alcoves exist in such close proximity to the vast arrays of neon sign topped towers. Then to add one more dimension you find out that on a hill top sits the biggest bronze Buddha on the planet, the third largest Buddha known to be in existence. The mind boggled. I had to confirm this with my own peepers and so began Tuesday, the day of my spiritual journey to the Tien Tan (I think) Buddha. The Buddha is located on Lantau Island West of Hong Kong Island which is reached by ferry, for those who wish to skim across ... read more

I had wanted to spend my last day in HK checking out the great buddha on Lantau Island. I just had to figure out the best (and cheapest) way to get there. While feasting on a delicious BBQ Pork roll, I decided to take the MTR to Tung Chung and get the no 23 bus to the monastery. People who think that there is nothing to see in HK haven't really taken the oppurtunity to visit the lesser known parts. Lantau Island is beautiful. The bus that took us up to the monastery passed sandy deserted beaches, great hiking spots, and lush green vegetation. You would never believe that such a beautiful, natural place could be located in ultra-urbanized HK. The ride to Po Lin monastery took about 25 minutes. You can't take meat or alcohol ... read more

The morning began like all others, early, with a huge breakfast. It was then off to Lantau Island, an hour long subway journey, followed by an hour long bus ride. We arrived in a small village, Ngong Ping, where the temperature was a souring 39 degrees and the humidity was a saturating 89% we were wet instantly. To start us off we ate at Jen’s choice of restaurant where we served sewerage soup, slimy noodles but yummy tempura veggies! It was then gelato all round before embarking on our massive assent up the, what seemed to be 1000 stair climb, to the biggest outdoor bronzed Buddha in the world. After several stops along the way, with people collapsing around us, we made it to the top. Spectacular views once more captured by our personalised camera man ... read more

My first night in Hong Kong was less than restful. My air conditioner is horrendously noisy, but also a necessary evil for sleeping in the cramped closet space. Four times during the night I had to lazily, drag myself to the end of the bed and push myself up to adjust the amount of cold air being pushed into my room. Never achieved the perfect temperature… My first full day in Hong Kong had a bit of promise. I took the ferry again to Hong Kong island and walked around. Saw the world’s longest escalator, which bored me so I changed directions and headed for the tram which takes you up to Victoria peak. It was surprisingly steep for a tram and I lurched from side to side trying to take in the harbor view that ... read more

The views from the cable car that takes you from Tung Chung to Po Lin are said to be spectacular, laying out the entire panorama of Lantau Island's northern coast. I wouldn't know. When I reached the MTR terminus on Lantau this morning, the cable car was down for annual servicing. That is how I found myself, a few hours later, hurtling downhill on a bus driven by a NASCAR-racer-wannabe. Actually, this guy could have given the NASCAR rednecks a run for their money. Not only was he fast as a lightning bolt, but he could make both left and right hairpin turns on a steep downhill slope. I sat in the back of the bus clinging to a handrail and listening to a group of drunk Australians cracking jokes. As we pulled up to a ... read more
