I must admit, any preconceptions I had of military personnel been dumb idiots were wrong. Our in flight entertainment for the 12 hour flight from London to Hong Kong was a proud member of her majesties armed forces. Our new soldier friend entertained us with interesting stories such as how rivalary between different sections of the army can often lead to fistups. The example he gave was when he met a member of the RAF in a local pub. Each slagged off the others section and ended up in full blown brawl with broken bottles etc. Reminded me of primary school fights over weather Man Utd or Liverpool were the better term. Made perfect sense..., the best way to resolve things is through violence. He proudly showed us his book "Shoot to kill" written by a member of the SAS. I thought it best not to produce my book, "Colombia Jail Journal". It would be a complement to call this guy a dumb idiot.. Sadly when we reached Hong Kong we went out separate ways. As we split I thought just as well that guy would never be making important life or death decisions.... mmmm.. yeah..
The next morning we set about
exploring Hong Kong's cheap street markets in Kowloon, and a couple of tourist sites. After a few days we headed for Shenzen, China for some massages, and cheaper street markets. Shenzen was disappointing in comparison with Hong Kong, but the cheap massages made the trip over the border worthwhile. For 10EUR we got 24hr access to the Queen spa & diner, where we got pampered with spas, saunas, massages, all the fruit/drinks we wanted. An abundance of staff ensured all our needs were taken care of: When leaving the pool, a staff member was there to provide a towel and another to dry our backs. A stark contrast to the living conditions to come. We didn't take advantage of the sleeping capsules as we already had booked into a hotel. Next day after a few more massages we headed back to Hong Kong, for some more strange street food, exotic fruits and dried lizard lolipops. After catching a few more tourist sights, such as the peak and Lamma island we decided to move on, after a quick animal rescue mission.
The flight to Cebu had got quite expensive so instead we headed to Manila. So it was we left one
of the worlds best airports for one of the worlds
worst
