My first day of school was good, if not a little scary. My first class is judgement and decision making. I have only heard good things about this class - very funny prof, interesting material, easy marker. In my marketing research class four groups asked me to join them as there is a lot of creativity involved in the project and there is a presentation and final paper. I am of course, the only white female in the class and one of two non asian kids overall.
My finance class is a different story. The professor asked all of the exchange kids to stay after class and then drew us a picture of the grade distribution. He drew two parallel horizontal lines on the board. Over the top line he wrote 'PRC' (Mainlanders), in between the two line he wrote 'local', and at the very bottom of the board he wrote 'exchange'. He also told us that is is not against failing exchange students.
Other than that the classes were enlightening. I already know a lot of the stuff in the decision making class from my consumer behaviour class and the marketing should be ok.
Last night I went out and
saw a comedy show. It was really quite good - there were 7 comedians and a host. I personally love commentary on different cultures, which there was plenty of. There was one comic who had a style very much like Russell Peters, who is one of my favorites. He is this east indian guy who also grew up in hong kong, so he speaks fluent cantonese. He had done the cantonese stand up show before the english one. That bilingualism really impressed me.
Afterward we went out for a drink with the comedians and we ended up staying out past the MTR window, so I decided to keep with the group and bar hop in LKF. One of the comedians tagged along - a math and computer programming major from the States. Now, I don't have anything against geeks and a little intelligent conversation, but we spent an hour and a half talking about computer viruses and Linux vs Windows. The group kind of ditched him on me, and frankly I was suprised that he had even taken us up on our half hearted invitation out, but he did. He kept on wondering what the plans were as we stood
outside the 7-11 (which is one of the more rockin' spots on LKF because the liquor is dirt cheap and you can drink it out on the street) and I told him that we are students - it will take at least a half an hour to figure out which bar we are going to. He still tagged along like a puppy, so to be nice I chatted with him, but I guess that he took that as a sign that I was interested or something and he wouldn't leave my side all night. Where ever I went, he gravitated. Long story short, I was so fed up with the situation by the end of the night that I darted into the cab with a quick 'bye' so that I wouldn't be guilted into giving him any way of contacting me. It sounds bad in type here but it really was like a terrible blind date that would never end (it lasted about 7 hours).
Tomorrow I have my first brand management marketing class at 5 pm, but in the meantime, maybe I should crack that finance textbook.
Exeunt.
