Today we began the morning by heading into the city to get our medicals done. We were a little nervous about where we were going and the kind of health standards that we were going to subject to ourselves to. After a short drive we pulled up outside an old soviet block building which did not improve my nerves, those who know me well know that I hate needles and am a bit of sook. Inside was actually quite modern, the doctor was nice and had visited Sydney before. He said that he thought Australia was a very pretty country. Our nerves were quickly set aside when nature started calling - having drunk a lot of water under Aaron's guidance I was more than ready to pee for our urine test. People were actually jumping at ... read more

Having arrived a day before other people in our group we spent the day exploring the city by foot with two of our fellow TLG members. Gerogian drivers are crazy, a zebra crossing does not mean that they will stop or even slow down - there were definately a few close calls today. We explored some of the old city and wonderd through streets and parks. The majority of the buildings were built in the soviet era and are in very poor condition, it is facinating to see how destroyed buildings can look if they are not maintained. It was good however to see that they are in the process of rebuilding and repairing the old buildings with construction work going on all over the town. Not only does this provide jobs but the buildings that ... read more

We departed Townsville at 5:50am Saturday 3rd of December, having not slept much the night before due to nerves and excitement. That plus 47 hours of travel time to get to Georgia equals some fairly shifty writing, the word tired does not cut it. When we arrived at Townsville Airport we were surprised by Nell and Ian, Aarons aunty and uncle who has driven from Mackay to see us off. My boss and his daughter Ashlyn who I taught this year also surpised us to say goodbye - this was really special and meant alot, thank you! After lots of tears we were off! We flew into Brisbane and spent some time with my mum and brother before heading to Cairns and then onto Hong Kong (yes we know, what the hell!). Whilst in Hong Kong ... read more

On Thursday it starts raining and I don’t think it’s ever going to stop. It’s been a strange week with Eka going off to work every morning and me staying at home. I did my first surreptitious wash up after she’d left one morning. Levan was still asleep in the living room so I closed the door to ensure he wouldn’t hear me and sneakily washed up the dishes in the sink. I figured Levan would think that Eka did it before she went to school and when Eka came home she’s think Levan had done it. My god I’m an idiot sometimes. I like the little ways I discover what’s acceptable or what’s expected of me though. On the first day Eka was going to school without me I thought it would be rude to ... read more

Monday was, technically, my first day at school. Neither myself nor Eka has any lessons on a Monday but we go in anyway to have a look around, meet the director and say ‘hello’ to the other teachers. I wake up early and we have breakfast before setting off. Since I didn’t do too much today now might be a good time to talk about the food in my house. It’s beautiful. Firstly Eka is a fantastic cook, and secondly we eat so many fresh ingredients, either from the animals or from the land. A typical breakfast for me will include a mug of hot milk that’s come from our own cow and a cup of Georgian tea with a slice of lime from the lime trees in the garden. We’ll have bread and cheese which ... read more

I wake up to my first full day in my new home feeling apprehensive to say the least. I’m not sure what the showering situation is so I get up and get dressed as quietly as possible prepared to face my first day without a shower since I last went to festival . I also have quite a lot of washing (that’s laundry to all you Americans out there) to do but I also don’t know what the situation is there either. I know the English are notorious for not wishing to offend people but I take it to the absolute extreme. I am constantly terrified of doing something wrong. Anyway, we have breakfast and Eka tells me we’re going into Zugdidi. I’m eager to see the town but first let me tell you a little ... read more

I’d be hard pushed to describe the atmosphere in the hotel on the morning we left. Some of us had planned to have one last look around Tbilisi before we met our host families at 12pm but it didn’t happen. There was packing to be done and then Georgian people started arriving in the lobby so we sort of hid in our rooms or in the bar, not really knowing what to do. Many of us were on our laptops trying to find out something, anything, about where we’ve been sent, not least of which was how far it is from where our friends are being sent. I think everyone is feeling a combination of excitement, impatience and nervousness. And a hint of sadness, of course. We’ve spent the last week together in an unprecedented ... read more

Time to leave Azerbaijan and see what Georgia has to offer. Ilgar's brother in law had collected me from the bus station on arrival, but Ilgar assured me that is was an easy walk back. It was down hill, but when carrying about 20kilos of luggage, a 30-40min walk is a long way. I stumble across the bus station accidentally as the directions I was given were wrong. The next minibus to Balakan is not for an hour, and it says Zaqatala on the front. It means I get a seat anyway which is good, many people have to stand and I am too tall for these minibuses. Also means that my legs are too long too so the ride is uncomfortable whichever way I travel. Only two hours to Zaqatala, there is meant to be ... read more

Balconies en masse OK we admit that cheat a little bit this time. Most of the text, and it isn't much, we have simply copied from a blog entry we wrote last year. But we spend so much time writing all the other blog entries that once in a while we think we can allow ourselves to put together one without effort. When we were in Tbilisi we walked through the streets and we were surprised over how many different styles of balconies they had in town. We started taking photos of them and the more we looked for balconies the more interesting they became. After a few hours we had quite a collection of photos of balconies. When we started this blog in 2006 the main purpose was to make it possible for us to ... read more

In Georgia there are lots of churches and fortresses If we are asked to describe Georgia using only three words we would say "churches and fortresses". If you visit a few places in Georgia you quickly realise that there are churches and fortresses everywhere. Many of them are really old and are also in very good condition. We knew already before we arrived that we couldn't visit them all because we would get bored after the first dozen or so. But even though we skipped many churches we still visited quite a few. In this blog entry we have focused on the capital Tblisi and the places we visited around Tbilisi. First we would like to write a little bit about a town a few hours by car north of Tbilisi, a town called Kazbegi. Kazbegi ... read more
