We started our exploration of Georgian wine country by spending the day in Sighnaghi. It seems to be an obligatory stop for anyone visiting Georgia’s wine country and it had been labeled ‘The City of Love,” so why not. The ancient walled city sits high on a ridge with incredible views across the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. With its high walls and towers, Sighnaghi used to be a trading center on the Silk Road. I find this quite ironic since we couldn’t even find one cute boutique for shopping. Like many old cities, Sighnaghi offers a quaint little city center, cobblestone streets and winding alleys. As we continued to find a proper generalized label for how to describe Georgia, this little village sitting upon the mountain ridges added another complication. Many might describe Sighnaghi ... read more

We returned to Shilda after our travels through Turkey to what was a fast and eventful three weeks. It began with a teachers’ concert in Kvareli. The concert was a performance by teachers from the villages and towns in our area and included traditional dance, singing and poetry. The teachers did a great job. It was interesting to see how different regions have their own traditional dress and dance styles. My personal favourite was the dance routine from the Dagestan village who still speak their traditional language while living in Georgia. The crowd loved them and gave them a huge applause. The performances were held in a large theatre which was built in Soviet Union times and was true to form in that it was spectacular in size considering the small population of Kvareli but unspectacular ... read more

Our visit to a fairy tale town Sighnaghi is the most beautiful town I have seen in all my travels, including Netherlands, Turkey, Romania, Spain and Italy. One of the few medieval towns that still has all its' city walls, Sighnahi is perched on a hill overlooking a vast valley, with the lofty, snow covered Caucasian mountains opposite. The entire town was recently redone by the Georgian government in an effort to boost tourism. Apparently this cost something like 1% of the GNP for an entire year. May I say it was worth the investment? While tourism is sharply down this year, due to the impact of last year's war with Russia, I think this town will attract visitors for a long time to come. Picturesc is an understatement. The air is clean, the views are ... read more

The old town of Sighnaghi is being torn apart at the moment apparently they are trying to beautify the city and all the fascade, streets and buildings are being remodelled all at the same time, it looks like a war torn village at the moment but it would be interesting to see how it looks like in a couple years from now. We met an American who lives here and shows us a bit of the town and the carpets and paintings in their collection, there was also some TV reporter on sight and Chris gets to be interviewed for his 15 minute of fame. The lunch we had at a Mexican restaurant Pancho Villa was very good, it's quite unusual experience to have a Mexican in the middle of Georgia. We had a couple ... read more
