For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight. To be updated

Chengdu and Happy Mountain Asia » China » Sichuan
Our flight to Chengdu was delayed so for some reason we had to split into different flights. The first half had to run to the gate and we were in charge of checking their luggage on the next flight. We ended up having to move to a different terminal with all of the extra luggage, which was a pain. Then after checking in we also had to run to our gate because of all the time we spent moving and checking in. It was a stressful, but funny experience and everyone eventually made it to Chengdu, so it was overall [View Full Entry]

Dinner at our place Asia » China » Shanghai
Last week we thought it would be a nice gesture to invite our Chinese co-teachers over for dinner. We cooked something simple, butter chicken, which turned out nice, and they brought a Christmas cake for dessert. Everything went well, although we had to quickly wash the dinner dishes before we could serve dessert (not enough plates/forkes etc). I'm sure they could understand that we don't have the best kitchen selection. Rebecca's co-teacher (Ivy) brought her son, who just started at our school. He is really smart and very cute! She said he enjoyed our cooking. [View Full Entry]

Butter Chicken dinner party Asia » China » Shanghai
My roommate and I decided to have our Chinese co-teachers over for a dinner...as an early Christmas celebration & to just be friendly. So after school last Thursday, Ivy and her son (Matthew) & Yolanda...and Sophie & Cici (Genelle's co-teachers) came over. We decided to cook butter chicken--one of my favourite things to cook because it's simple & tasty & it's an entire meal in one dish since it has carbs, meat, vegetables and dairy! We served it with rice and bread. Too bad we couldn't find naan bread. Everyone liked it, even 2-year-old Matthew! It was the first time we [View Full Entry]

A Chinese Christmas  Asia » China » Guangdong » Zhongshan
Greetings friends, family, and lost web surfers, December in China is just lovely. Christmas decorations are all over the city. Twinkle lights sparkle in palm trees along city streets and beautifully decorated trees are in the lobby of every hotel. I wasn’t expecting this at all. Christmas in China? You betcha. I’m sitting inside my smoky webcafe surrounded by old Chinese men playing poker and hundreds of delicate paper snowflakes hanging from the ceiling. A white western looking Santa Claus is in the corner smiling lovingly while I type away. I so didn’t expect this. San [View Full Entry]

Big Buddhas Asia » China » Sichuan » Leshan
Hello all, Nothing new to report other than that I went to LeShan last week with a friend to see the largest Buddha effigy on the planet last weekend. Read more here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leshan_Giant_Buddha My thoughts aren't very collected at the moment, so I don't have much to say other than we met some fascinating people, saw some temples more personally inspiring than the main attraction, and that the Big Buddha was, despite the tourists, numinous. See more here! http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm93/sterlingsin/Chengdu2009/LeShan/ Actually, you know what? Let's [View Full Entry]

Xi'an Asia » China » Shaanxi » Xi'an
The next few blogs are all about my two week study trip around China, I have them all written already, but it is 15 pages long. I will split them up so it's not just one huge entry with 300 pictures, that way people can actually read them in one sitting. The trip started in Xi'an (Terra Cotta Warriors), then we went to Chengdu (Panda Research Center), Le Shan or "Happy Mountain" (Giant Buddha), back to Chengdu (free day shopping and city park), Lijiang (4 days - mountains, shopping, relaxing), Dali (cruise on a famous lake), Kunming (industrialized, dirty, and slighty [View Full Entry]

Many people think of China as a land where the dominant characteristics of society are homogeneity and obedience. This is true, to a point. For example, when I asked eight-year old Chinese students to write laws for an imaginary country, two of the most important laws were "protect national secrets" and "carry an identity card." But China, especially southwest China, is also home to an impressively diverse group of ethnic and cultural minorities. The only problem, of course, is reaching these places, and transportation in China can be a headache. The mo [View Full Entry]

Karaoke and Gingerbread Houses Asia » China » Hubei » Wuhan
Ok, so the two don't mix but that was the story of our weekend! There are two very popular things that we hadn't done since we have lived here; Chinese massage and karaoke. This weekend we crossed off the latter. Karaoke houses or bars are huge here and when I say huge, I mean incredibly popular. Apart from going to the dance clubs, it is the thing to do here on a Friday or Saturday night. They are known locally as KTVs and any building that contains one will have KTV in big letters somewhere on the outside of the place. [View Full Entry]

Holidays Asia » China » Hubei » Wuhan
Well it's been awhile :) Thanksgiving, Halloween, remembrance day have all slid on by. My time here in Wuhan is flying by faster than when I was in Dalian. - Many of the seasoned teachers warned me about the long haul from October break to the big 5 week in Jan, but I can't believe that we're only a month away from our big holiday. TIME IS FLYING! Christmas is right around the corner, and this was a cause of slight concern back when I was in Canada. Questions of ' What was my first Christmas away from home going to [View Full Entry]
