For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight. To be updated

My parents and I decided to take a walk around downtown. Luckily I didn't leave my camera at home. It was a real treat to capture the scenes of metropolitan Beijing while on foot. We passed by some commercial districts and had lunch at the 5-star hotel - Prime Hotel. The waitress had the exact same name as me! It was quite exciting to find someone of the same alias.. Hehe. Tagged by the commercial districts again on the way back, and dropped by a different Starbucks. [View Full Entry]

New Years Eve in Shanghai Asia » China » Shanghai
After a few days recovery from the craziest Christmas I'd ever had, I was off to Shanghai to meet up with my girlfriend Ali (or Jia Jia as she is better known here) who was nice enough to spend her 3-week break from work to come over and visit. Lucky me have rich foreigner girlfriend, so we checked into the New Asia Hotel for 5 days of temperature control heating, great water pressure, continuous hot water and king sized luxury over the New Year period. HEAVEN! We picked a great time to come to Shanghai, the first night there it snowed, [View Full Entry]

Beijing, Xi'an, Panyu Happy New Year to everyone! Well, thank goodness I didn't go to Phuket. At one point I was planning on going there. Made the right choice not to. What a horrid disaster. Well, I've made it back to Hong Kong from my travels. What an experience. Our tour was in Cantonese, so I really had to guess what was going on. We had two translator friends with us, who helped us out. Why take a Cantonese tour and not an English one? Well, it way cheaper - more than half price! BEIJING Beijing is a very modern city, [View Full Entry]

Everything is hunky-dory in China! The government is the best ever and getting better! Well, it is if you believe what you see on China's English language news channel, CCTV (ironic name - let's rename Fox News to "CIA"). Scary thing is, it ain't that different to ours, just less subtle. ...And the worst toilet in the world 2004 award goes to the internet cafe I used in Xian. China has the worst toilets I have ever seen/smelt, which is saying something after the Middle East. This place deserves the award for the kind of paralysing reek of shit that makes [View Full Entry]

New Year's Eve '04 Asia » China » Beijing
Visiting my family at Beijing. Tonight is New Year's Eve, and we went to Dadong Kaoya Dian for their famous roast duck Beijing style. They're prepared in their secret trademark style and they're so good that there's no chain store anywhere else in the world... and they don't have to take reservations! [View Full Entry]

Christmas in Yangshuo Asia » China » Guangxi » Yangshuo
Merry Christmas! I hope your end of year festivities were enjoyable and you have started the new year on a good one. While all you down in the Southern Hemisphere have no doubt been indulging in all the goodness that is summer, I’ve been FREEZIN MY ASS OFF here in Yangshuo. Not that winter here is any colder than Canberra or Melbourne, but it’s just that decent heaters are a rarity in these parts so you really do feel the winter. With the wetness and coldness factor limiting climbing to an extent, we gather around little coal burners inside Chinaclimb and [View Full Entry]

Unless there is a huge war, Beijing is gonna replace Washington DC as the new capital of the world, so learn your pinyin Boys. Oh, and if this is communism, then I am Chairman Mao. The people in China are very friendly and helpful and some even have a sense of humour. Walking down the street, a bunch of people are giggling and pointing at the westerner: "HelLoOo" (more giggles). The best way to give the Chinese a good laugh is to try to talk to them in Mandarin - they love it. Follow that up with a few badly pronounced [View Full Entry]

Rockclimbing in Yangshuo Asia » China » Guangxi » Yangshuo
The day after the Yangshuo Basketball tournament fiasco, I moved straight into my job for the following 3 weeks, Acting Manager of Chinaclimb while Mike went back to Canada for a holiday. Yangshuo is rapidly becoming renowned around the globe for its world class climbing. The endless amount of quality limestone mixed in with the laid back affordable lifestyle of West Street has made this southern Chinese destination a 'must do' in the travelling rockclimber's itinerary. Ni Hao! Well I'm now about half way through my Chinese odyssey. It has been a fantastic 3 months where I have learnt a hell of a lot and met some amazing people from all over the world. For the past month I’ve been hanging out, occasionally climbing or guiding with chinaclimb, but more often just taking it easy, here in my home away from home in Yangshuo. In the evening I have been going down to the local hospital which has a basketball court out the front. From about 5pm until it gets too dark (or when its time for [View Full Entry]

A Venture Out...to China! Asia » China
Hello friends and family! Well, once again I have traveled outside the “Land of the Rising Sun” to explore a little more of Asia. Last month, I spent a week or so in China. I was mostly in Beijing, but I did travel outside of the city a bit to check out some stuff nearby. Beijing is an awesome city. It has tons of culture, shopping, and good food. It is really clean and beautiful and very quaint. It’s a great place for the upcoming 2008 summer Olympics. So we checked out the big touristy stuff…Forbidden Palace, Tiananmen Square, Great Wall [View Full Entry]
