Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Dengang havde byen 1 million indbyggere, [View Full Entry]

slacken the pace Asia » China » Zhejiang » Shaoxing
180rmb/night got me a spacious top floor back corner room in a three star hotel overlooking lush green Fushan park. Complete with complimentary teas, a shower cap, a bubble bath and a sauna to keep me entertained while the electrical storm pelted the city centre just outside my ridiculously large aquarium windows. I hadn't planned on Shaoxing but exiting from Huangzhou's bus station, having just arrived from small-city Tunxi and its quaint surrounding villages, I felt put off by the crowds and the thought that any kind of sightseeing in the area was going to be a pre-packaged sor [View Full Entry]

So Natasha, Jenny and myself decided we wanted to go to Hangzhou, a city 2 hours away from Shanghai and spend the night there. Hangzhou, is one of the most important tourist venues in China. When Marco Polo arrived to the city he said it was the most beautiful city on earth. I have heard some people saying: "There is heaven in the sky, in the earth we have Hangzhou" (or something like that). We decided to go by train and I have to say the trip was really good, we were surrounded by dozens of Chinese people that were either [View Full Entry]

Wow China is quite the cultural shock. My first meal in China was at the airport in Shenzen and I ordered Noodles with Chicken. What I got was a huge bowl with noodles and all sorts of chicken parts floating around. There were at least one or two whole eggs in there as well. The dish was very flavorful, but I do not like eating parts of chicken that I do not know what they are. Plus the meal was so big, I could hardly eat any of it. I think in China when you eat out you are suppose to [View Full Entry]

Early rise this morning, we are booked on the 7.20 train to Yiwu. I have a very ill-timed nose bleed in the middle of morning preparations and as a result there are only twenty minutes left when we jump into a taxi and ask him to hurry for the main railway station. Fortunately the elevated highway is devoid of any major traffic jams and as we reach the station there are still a few minutes left. The unexpected security screening chews another precious minute on the way. Running through the station asking any official coming my way about the train to [View Full Entry]

High Pants in Jinhua  Asia » China » Zhejiang » Jinhua
Ni hao once again. The basketball tour finished on a great high. After loosing all four games to the Americans (embarrisingly getting thrashed by 30 in the last game in Changshu...and 'loosing face' according to our financier Mr Liu), we regathered and enjoyed a well earned 2 day break which included an 8 hour bus drive from Yangzhou to Jinhua, Zhejiang province, to play a 2 game series against Chinese National League champions the Guangdong Tigers. They are preparing for their upcoming season and had 3 national team reps and 2 American imports. Mr Liu's pants were getting higher and higher [View Full Entry]
