guangzhou to yangshou

 Asia » China » Yangshuo
I believe I left you on the day I had arrived in Guangzhou. I think it was the day when i went for dinner with the chinese guy i met in my dorm. He was ethnicly chinese but spent most of his life in australia. This was good because he could speak English and Chinese very well. At midnight he took me to a sea food market because the fresh batch comes in at midnight and so we walked around a found some shrimps which we purchased and then took to a nearby restaurant for them to cook for us. Dag 6

 Asia » China » Yangshuo

I hung out in Guilin for about a week and didn't really do anything at all. For about a week my days consisted of walking around the city and walking thru all of the parks. I met some cool people at my hostel and just hung out with them for a little while just walking around town going to the local places and going to the night market. Guilin is a place to walk around and be outside, they have the most amazing ice cream (3 yuan/ about 40 cents) here and since it was was pretty hot it definetly came [View Full Entry]

1. Random stabbings in Akhihabara 2. Tiger maulings in Kyoto 3. Bird flu and chicken cullings in Hong Kong. I'll go into detail on this one. Oh, and there is a number four, so just wait for that one. So when we woke up in the morning in Hong Kong, the first thing to greet us on all the papers are pictures of scientists in full contamination suits slaughtering chickens, and headlines that say something like, BIRD FLU IN HONG KONG. Oh yay... So some chickens imported from the mainland were found with the deadly bird flu strain, so the authorities [View Full Entry]

Flooded out roads

stuck in a time warp?
stuck in a time warp?
This is actually a common scene, a reminder that China is still a developing country, with a large peasant population
First of all, this will probably be a longer post. I dont expect everyone to read it all haha, and as I said before, one of the main reasons for these postings is for ME to remember things too. So, it will be long, and maybe boring, but for me I enjoy reading and remembering these things. There are so many misconceptions about China! Western media and perceptions on China are so charged, with so much emotion and so many notions about the way things are here. For one, everything is ridiculously clean. Like, they are ALWAYS cleaning things. The streets [View Full Entry]

Chengyang & Ping'an

Climbing in Yangshou

 Asia » China » Yangshuo
For a hot second I thought I was moving to Vietnam for the summer. I received an email from a guiding company located on the island of Cat Ba Island in Ha Long Bay asking if I was avalible to work for them for the summer; I was stoked, super stoked but in the end it didn't work out and they didn't get the project I was going to work on....oh well; maybe next year. So where did I want to go next, back to Yangshou and climb the limestone karsts I saw only a few days before. It's slow season [View Full Entry]

an overdue post yet again. somehow ive lost the impetus to blog; not as psyched for it as with my previous sojourn. its really an acquired skill; an art of sorts, to live by the day and to function without an agenda. as pegs would say, 'to dysfunction into function'. its almost 2 wks in yangshuo now; and the dream-like karstscape is really surreal, ethereal and picturesque all at once. its an unassuming little town abt an hr off guiling, yes you read right guilin haha. the closest semblance to that we have back home is the conspicuous and almost obnoxious [View Full Entry]
