Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Each day seems to be getting better in Tibet and I have a knot in the pit of my stomach about leaving so soon. Everyday I ask myself how this day could possilby top the previous day, and I'm amazed that it somehow always does. Today is no exception. The story of this day is twofold: beginning with an archery tournament and concluding with the camaraderie of my monk friends at the temple. The day is launched with the annual archery tournament in Guinan. It is important to preface this story by noting the significance of the role that archery plays [View Full Entry]

Seven days in Tibet Asia » China » Tibet
Day 43 - November 22, 2008 On our way to our 7-day Tibet tour We woke up bright and early at 4 AM to catch our minibus to go to Tibet. We had breakfast halfway to the border (4400 feet). We finally arrived at Kadori Nepal/China border after 7 hours of travel. We had to walk a long way and uphill to the “Friendship Bridge” as the roads are so small and some vehicles kept pressing on so that traffic had become stagnant. At the border is chaos. Hundreds of Nepalis are lining up to visit relatives in Tibet. The immigration [View Full Entry]

Rooftop of the World! Asia » China » Tibet
AsiaSinFronteras gaat verder!

Tashedelek (Hello from Tibet) Asia » China » Tibet » Lhasa
This is the most amazing place I have ever been. Flying into Lhasa, over the mountains, was breathtaking. As soon as the seatbelt light went off everyone clammored over to take pictures, it was quite a spectacle. There were snow capped mountains as far as the eye could see. We have spent the last few days wandering around the older part of Lhasa, enjoying the beautiful scenery and wonderfully friendly people. There is a monestary at the center of old Lhasa and our hotel borders the edge of it. We have a great view from the roof of the local people [View Full Entry]

Sunday 2nd - This morning we had a late start so we ventured to the market, well, we stepped outside our hotel into the middle of it... We brought some sheep wool innersole for our trekking boots, they're really comfy and only 50p each... Our day trip was to the Potala palace, to get in here we had to give in our passports and go when the government, plus we were only allowed to spend an hour in there... But lukily our guide managed to get some more time, but got told not to talk about politics inside.... Again we werent [View Full Entry]

A little more Tibet Asia » China » Tibet » Gyantse
Thursaday 6th contined...... We drove over three passes all nearing 5000m.....incredible views when driving over snow topped mountains. Our tour guide actually walked over these mountains to get into India to study Buddhism in Dharamasala, he had to walk over the mountains as the government would not grant him a visa to leave Tibet....he walked at night and slept hidden in the day. At the top of the first pass we stopped in the most spectacular place, a massive lake formed in a valley between two joining mountains at about 4800m....so unbelievable it was perfect completely untouched, its ca [View Full Entry]

RONNIE MY LOVE Asia » China » Tibet
Hellooo from Nepal! We've had so many crazy adventures already just in our first month traveling, its proving really difficult to remember and share them all so here is our story of our trip through Tibet into Nepal with a crazy group of people and our peice of shit van named Ronnie. Tibet is really one of the hardest countries for foreigners to travel into because of the recent events with the Chinese communist government, it requires special travel permits and you usually have to sign up for special group tours that costs hundreds of american dollars. That presented us with [View Full Entry]

Well, I made it back from my second epic adventure around China, and finally have found a moment to tell you the story of our Tibetan trials and tribulations. And of course show you a few more of some of the 1300 or so photos I managed to take in 3 weeks. If you have the time and patience, read on… The trip to Shanghai didn’t get off to the best start with fog delaying our departure, but as with my last trip to China, on arrival in Shanghai we took the marvellous Maglev in to the heart of the city.
