Hi All After a hearty lunch and a recharge of the ebike we headed south of Daocheng to visit ReWu Temple. I must admit I have been impressed by the ebike as it took 2 people up a dirt road right up to the top of the mountains. The temple has many houses around it with some derelict buildings too. The temple was undergoing restoration and we had a chat with some of the men doing the paintings for inside the main hall. A kind man did unlock one of the buildings and he told us that the building was 600 years old. The view from the temple was absolutely stunning. Looking down on the main Daocheng - Yading road and looking over the mountains made me feel that I was truly on top of the ... read more

Hi All, With only one day in Daocheng we decided to hire an ebike and go for a ride around. The ebike cost 80 RMB for a day. We went out in the morning to visit ZhuJie temple which overlooks the main road from Daocheng to Litang. The journey there goes through some very pretty Tibetan villages and the road up to the temple is very windy and steep. The temple's was all shut because there was no electricity but a monk did let us into the main prayer hall and took us upstairs where there were some statues of Shakyamuni buddha and of the founder of the temple. The paintings on the walls were so colourful with many tantric images. After visiting the hall we had a walk up the mountain to see some of ... read more

The weather was picture perfect, the traffic volume low and alpine-esque valleys lay below me in all their glory. I had timed the ride just right. It was 1 pm, the hottest part of the day and my altimetre indicated an altitude of 4.400 metres as I headed ever upwards to Chola pass in Western Sichuan. I had spent the night in the cleanest hotel of the whole trip, showered with hot water for the first time in days and spent the morning happily clicking away at Dege printing lamasery's treasures. Now it was time to double-back and return to the north-south route that would take me up to Qinghai province and on to the New Frontier (Xinjiang). All of a sudden, as is the habit, I heard a revolving noise. Deciding to listen further before ... read more

I think that yesterday was so incredible that I'm not sure anything else on this trip will be able to top it. I'm in the Tibetan ethnic area if western Sichuan, where it is mountainous, cold, and spectacular. We spent a night I kangding where we ate delicious Tibetan food and avoided the rain, and then two days in tagong, really the wild west of china (people riding horses through town, Tibetan cowboys, and lots of yaks). Also an american who was starting up a cafe and arts collective, whom we happily helped out in exchange for a warm fire to escape the rain, hail, and snow. The second day started off cloudy but we set off on a walk anyway, across the grasslands to what turned out to be a monks' college. On the way ... read more

My last update saw me just having arrived back at Chengdu after a very special trip to Tibet. However, I still had 3 weeks or so before I had to be in Saigon (to meet Danielle :-) ) and I'd heard of an adventurous way into Northern Yunnan and was toying with the idea of taking it, when I met up with Janet, a Kiwi who I'd originally met in Hanoi a couple of months ago. We thought we'd probably bump into each other again as our routes would cross over, so it was especially good when she mentioned it and asked if I fancied joining her to do exactly that trip! With a day to get the boring admin jobs out of the way - like buying food and sending a box of Tibetan goodies ... read more
