After a hot, sweaty, bumpy and downright awful night of the sleeper train (for some reason I cannot get my head around sleeping on a train and I panic with every bump) we arrived at a much hotter place than Xi'an. We were met by a man named Jim who was to help us with our bags for the day before we board the boat tonight. What actually happened was we headed straight of the boat and dumped our bags off then headed out into Chongqing to explore for the day. We were given some time to freshen up and have breakfast, we had taken a loaf of bread from the apartment and some jam to eat this morning and we enjoyed this in a park that Jim took us too. It was very hot but ... read more

家庭和朋友 (Family & Friends), Booze Before Dinner: After spending roughly a week in Chongqing, while limited, I feel that my experiences gave me a taste of the city and its people. As a traveler you can only skim the surface, as opposed to a resident, whom can dive deeper into the surrounding culture. Still, the theme of my understanding was three fold: people, pollution, and hot pot. Each holding its own place within the city, for better or worse. Regardless of which, each is true to the experience and what separates modern China from the stereotype. Everywhere I have been in China the people have been largely, accepting and genuine. Whether it be asking for help with the menu or having dinner with local families, for the most part everyone has been accommodating. Point in case, ... read more

家庭和朋友 (Family & Friends), Chongqing at a Glance: While my first few days here have been limited to recovering to from the 30 sum odd hours of travel and tying up loose ends at school, I have been out and about soaking up the Chinese culture. The 13-hour time difference between the U.S. and Chongqing China has finally started to release its grip from my body and I am starting to feel a bit normal. Chongqing, located in the central Sichuan province of China, is known mainly for its hot pot cuisine and its exploding growth. The theme so far has been pollution and people. While most do not speak English and stare at the white man walking down the street, they seem to be genuine in there sincerity to help you. I have even been ... read more

I have arrived in Chongqing. I have no internet yet; hopefully I will get it set up tomorrow. I figured I would write my second blog on word and upload it later so I don’t forget my thoughts. I will hopefully also be uploading some photos for you to see the city. So first off I am incredibly impressed by the city, the people and my apartment! The city is gorgeous. It is also unimaginably big. There are apartments and other buildings as far as the eye can see in all directions no matter where you drive. The areas around the buildings are beautifully landscaped with flowers, trees and walk paths. Everything is kept very clean and well maintained. My apartment and many others have swimming pools, tennis/basketball courts and exercise equipment out front. In the ... read more

This is my first blog from my year long excursion to China. As a forewarning, my grammar is likely to suck…I am a math major after all. I rarely write anything anymore. Hopefully this new habit of blog writing and teaching English/Language Arts at school will lead to my own grammar improvement. I am currently sitting in the Hong Kong airport, which has free internet. It is 6am and my connecting flight to Chongqing is not until 2pm. The airport is very nice. There are all the amenities of America here-from English speakers to Starbucks and Popeyes. The outside walls are all windows and I can see gorgeous mountains and a big body of water surrounded by mountains nearby. I also see a huge factory. The air is heavy with fog…at least I think it is ... read more

Hi Everyone. We are still alive and well. Luckly we were on a boat on the Yangzi River when the earthquake hit so we didnt feel a thing!, although we were slightly worried that the Three Gorges Dam may collapse!. We were very close to the epicentre. Unfortunatly right now we are in the centre of it all in Chongqing (SICHUAN PROVINCE) and trying to arrange transport out of here to Xian since the military seem to be taking over the hotels, etc. All communications are being blocked by the Chinese government so I cant get access to my Hotmail or Facebook. This seems to be the only way I can get a message out. We didnt even have access to the news in English until thismorning so we were unaware of how bad the situation ... read more

The journey from Chengdu to Chongqing took about four hours, and went through some of the most fertile and hilly land in all of China. We passed through extensive areas of terraced rice paddies, where we saw many of the farmers ploughing their ground in the traditional way, that is, using a simple wooden plough pulled by one or two oxen - no wonder that this area is called the breadbasket of China - and eventually caught our first glimpse of the mighty Yangtze River as we approached Chongqing. The Yangtze in this area is virtually the dividing line between the rice growing area and the grain growing area of China, the grain being grown in the flatter areas between the river and the coast. After we got off the train, we once again joined the ... read more
