Chengdu - Never Heard of It... Amongst our "Bottom 3" bus journeys was the the bus from Chongqing to Chengdu. 7 hours spent in seats for midgets with absolutely no legroom was not our idea of fun. However, this aside, Chengdu, that well known Chinese city of 5 million people rocked. We checked into our next hotel and spent the day exploring the city with it's countless rickshaws, restaurants and flourescently lit bridges. Chengdu is a modern day Chinese city with lots of old day culture. The 100 foot Mao statue which pays homage to the PRC's "Father" is pretty impressive, particularly when it is covered in bamboo scaffolding! Early start again and another 3 hour bus journey to see the worlds biggest Buddah. Carved over a 90 year period by Buddhist Monks some 1400 years ... read more

its been a while again and the most hectic week and a half yet. We left Laos on a 8hr bus trip to the Chinese border and were pleasantly surprised by the organisation, order and sanitary conditions we were met with....then we saw the toilets (which have become standard so far)...basically squat toilets with no flush, no door and no wall so open for all to see lol. From the border we bused to a town called Men lai where we were to get the 6hr transfer to Jinghong...we sat for 6hrs in the station waiting for a bus that never arrived so made the decision to take the overnight sleeper bus all the way to Kunming the following day. The bus had three rows of 2 tier bunkbeds where i somehow managed to get the top bunk in the middle right at the front of the bus (the worst possible position) needless to say I did not get any sleep on the 23hr journey and was clinging onto my belongings as ti... read more

Many people’s sole purpose for visiting Chengdu is to see the Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center. While the center has been very successful in breeding the pandas, it seems to be supported by a zoo exclusively for Giant and Red Pandas. It’s not a bad zoo in general, the habitats for the pandas are pretty large and they are fed well and only their natural diet (I think mainly because they are too picky to eat anything else), so all in all it isn’t a bad place for a zoo. But in general, I do hate zoos. Anyway, the provincial government of Sichuan, and the national government, are been taking great care to preserve the Giant Panda, which is a good thing because the animal does very little to help themselves. There is a population ... read more

Caught the 1.30pm overnight train to Cheng Du. It was a soft sleeper this time which means that we had a cabin with just 4 bunks in (similar to, but more roomy than the Trans Sib). Everyone chilled out or slept for a while before embarking on games of backgammon and then 'in betweenies'. The latter being a high-brow game of intellect skill and chance, where players receive 2 cards each and then bet an amount as to wether a third card is likely to fall 'inbetween' the first two. Brendan has discovered a particular talent for this and won (us) a massive 100 RMB (approx 6 pounds). We amazingly fitted 10 of us in one cabin to play this. Fortunately we all get on really well and are happy to be allocated adjoining bunks, but ... read more

This is the first e-mail I sent. I added comments to the photos here. Hi guys, Just thought I'd say hello to you all. I'm having a great time in China. Very different from anything I've seen before. I'm writing from Songpan, a village up in the mountains of Sichuan (well, it's 70,000 people, which qualifies it as a hamlet in Chinese terms). Just got back from a two day horse trek in the mountains up here. It's been quite an experience riding a horse. You have to get used to the idea that your mode of transportation has a mind of it's own and doesn't necessarily so what you want it to do. To prove the point, my horse didn't like another horse overtaking him, and so they got into a bit of a ... read more

Giant Buddha of Leshan Off work from Chengdu, I did a side trip with Ade and Hailong to the Giant Buddha of Chengdu. Really glad to have this time away from work and free my mind. The Largest carving of a Buddha in the world. The Leshan Buddha is indeed a magnificant sight to behold. The most amazing part is how it was constructed. Most Chinese in China are buddhist and every year, many people make their way Leshan to make offerings to Buddha and to be blessed. There are many temples on this Mountain and it does make a nice afternoon leisure activity to stroll the many temples and greenery around as well as sipping tea in the quient tea houses on the mountain.... read more

Hi, Emei Shan is a holy mountain with many temples and monestaries 2 hours south of Chengdu. I have been hiking there 3 days. In low height, the scenary is beautiful but as I proceeded up and up, the weather became more fogy and hazy so the visibilty was very bad. On one hand this is, of course, a misadvantage but on the other hands this fits my knowledege, based on Chinese movies that I have watched, that China is a fogy and misty country. Another annoying thing here is that all the trails are concrete and many many stairs so the climbing is very difficult. The mountain is very touristic by Chinese tourists. They normally hike in the trails near the bus stops or the cable car stops as through the mountain there is a ... read more
