So 2 days ago I worked in 2 centres, meaning a change of hotel in the middle of the day. I took all my stuff with me, the hotel called a taxi and it took about 15 minutes, no unnecessary diversions and he had put the address in his satnav So found it no problem. After the first session getting a taxi wasn’t quite so easy. The centre rep had an app on her phone but the first one cancelled on her. Then all 3 of us tried unsuccessfully to flag one down in the street. They all sailed past, even the ones with green lights. They can’t have liked the look of me with all my bags. Eventually they managed to order another one. Again, no diversions. The second hotel, the Amara Signature Shanghai, was ... read more

Our trip to Shanghai started with a delay which is so expected at this point that it almost seems like if the delay is less than a few hours, we are actually on time! We had some issues with towing the a/c from our hangar to the departure area, but we made it in time (thanks to the delay) and had a nice flight to Shanghai. We essentially had to do an instrument approach because of the amount of smog and pollution. We couldn’t see the runway until a little over a mile out! We landed, got the plane cleaned up, got a ride to our hotel, had a quick dinner and then hit the hay. The next morning I was up early and decided to let the Concierge at the hotel help me come up ... read more

Because Abby is a marriott points millionaire, we got to start our day off in style by eating in the VIP club at the top of the hotel. This was pretty amazing as we could see the whole city. We met our tour group in the lobby and headed off to explore Shanghai. Diva squad showed up in 4 inch platform heels which they promptly traded in for sandals, a great disappointment to the rest of us. Our first stop was The Bund where we saw a wall street style bull (apparently a gift after the US single handedly took down the market, our bad), a flower wall (self explanatory) and the new skyline of Shanghai. We snapped some obligatory pics and I schemed on how I was going to steal a Chinese baby as they ... read more

After my first two weeks of classes (sorry for being an infrequent blogger...), I truly miss orientation week and realize how little I treasured it beforehand. This program has turned out to be much more difficult than I had originally anticipated. My schedule requires me to attend Chinese class 10am-12pm Monday through Thursday in addition to 3 other classes that meet for 3 hours once a week. I find myself spending between 3-6 hours on just my Chinese homework every night, leaving little or no time to do anything else after class other than get food. Each class begins with a quiz on 20-30 vocab words, characters, pinyin, and meaning. Each week we have a test on the 2 chapters that we learned the past 4 classes. Luckily for me, my Laoshi has chosen to hold ... read more

It's day 6 of my Chinese adventure and so far I've noticed about half of my pre-conceptions were correct. The food here is much better than I anticipated and I already know I will miss it upon my departure in June. However, I have also come to realize I'm not quite as good at using chopsticks as I thought... Its surprisingly difficult to eat slippery dumplings and noodles with two sticks. Thank god I'm picking up on strategies of my Chinese friends/people who have been here longer than I. My roommate, Maria, and I have discovered a true Chinese treasure called Coco's. It's a bubble tea place that makes the most amazing drinks. I had a Mango Au Lait and hot Pineapple Black tea with pineapple chunks that changed my life and beat Starbuck's (Singbake as ... read more

After a super efficient flight from Hanoi to Shanghai with a quick change in Guangzhou and sneaking through the "special queue" at immigration, we arrived at our lovely hostel - unbelievably our first hostel on this trip. We decided to settle here for a week and packed an awful lot in! With Shanghai being so westernised, we took advantage of the huge shopping malls to buy new clothes, drink Starbucks, eat delicious Sushi and see Kung Fu Panda 2 (where better to see it than China really?!) Our hostel was conveniently located next to a huge Carrefour so we made many trips here to pick up pots of noodles and get excited by food we recognised. Just like being back in Lille....only with a slightly Chinese slant! After purchasing such pretty clothes, shoes, bags etc, we ... read more

I took an early train and arrived back in shanghai around 8 am. It was my intention to take a day to rest and organise the next few days. This was much needed. While I sat in the bar I began talking to some people and I was invited to a house party, I found out they were working in schools in china as English teachers as were most of their friends that arrived at the part. On the way to the party I took a stroll along the bund at night and it is a sight to see but once again the smog clouds spoil it, in some parts the clouds resembled the aurora borealis with shades of green,. I found the house party and met t guys that invited me, one of them lived ... read more

I moved to another hostel in Shanghai which was a whopping great 40p dearer than the first place I stayed and it was fantastic. The building was spotless; the staff were so friendly and helpful and it also had a bar that served both eastern and western food and all sorts of snacks. The place had a yuppie vibe with long couches and deep leather couches forming a square I the centre, low lighting and great music. We went into Shanghai bus station to organise tickets to Tunxi, a town that would be our base for climbing the mountain then spent the day wandering around the Bund seeing it from different angles, later on I wanted to get a view from one of the towers but most days the smog cloud destroys any decent chance of ... read more

Two days after we left Osaka the ferry arrived at Shanghai. Customs here was much less hassle than id expected. Finding the Metro line wasn’t much difficulty either but it was an eye opener. Compared to Japan, China isn’t just a different country it’s a different world altogether. Even during rush hour in Japan people will be allowed to alight from the train before the charge begins and then the station porters push people inside so the doors can shut, in china as soon as the doors open people charge the train creating a bottleneck, it’s as much a struggle to get on as it is to get off, some guy didn’t just push me aside he body slammed me into the of the train, I got him back and good. Along our route I just ... read more
