Shandong Travel Blogs

Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Another Brick in the Wall
After entering the south gate of campus, you come upon this wall. I walk by it when I venture to the lake. I figure I should make an honest effort to understand what it means. As with any other lan... [more]
I want to talk a bit about a couple of books I've been mulling over. Both of the books are about Chinese political icons and thus are at present still quite politically sensitive. With the idea of "not biting the hand that feeds me," I'm not going to go into detail about these books and people, yet it's important to address them in the least. The first, entitled "Sun Yat-Sen and Communism," refers to the first revolutionary leader of the modern era named Sun Yat-Sen (west) or 孙中山 or Sun Zhong Shan (east). China in the 20th century can mildly be [View Full Entry]

I have got more chance to surf!
I can hardly believe that I have got the chance to surf again! Still in the Old stoneman beach in Qingdao. Those friends from California also come to teach us today! It's really exciting to do so,after that day's surf I think I have almost made it ,to stand on the surf broad with my two feet! The waves are stronger than yesterday's,so I didn't need to paddle very much .I can feel the water pushing me ,and I try my best to stood on it as soon as possible.Once I stood on it I felt that I can almost control it [View Full Entry]

This is a picture of the CUP campus, otherwise known as shi you da xue, at Huangdao. This campus is a lot more modern; it was built within the last 5 to 7 years.
I know, I know, this blog entry is way overdue, and I apologize for my negligence toward my blog. There's so much I want to talk about but I really don't know where to begin. Furthermore, I don't want to bore you with another longwinded entry, so for the sake of brevity, I will try to be as clear and concise as possible. Let's start with the Golden Week National Holiday (September 30th-October 7th) where my fellow foreign teacher Jake and I planned a trip to explore the mid to northeast region of the Shandong Province. We were able to hit [View Full Entry]

Wow!It's my fist time surfing in my life!Yesterday 11 surfers from California come to Qingdao to teach Chinese students surf .I have watched surf on television for hundred times ,but I have never tried before .So it's such a surprise when an American told me about this one day before. I met all the American surfers at their hotel this morning and then led they to the coach which took us to the old stoneman beach ,where we have surfed there for a whole day. It's a lovely day ,and the wind is just right for surfing. After everything got ready ,Gearhart [View Full Entry]

It's been a little while, as we've been busy..... I think we left you in Ulaan Baatar where we were staying in an apartment some way from the centre of town. The following morning as we were getting ready to go out what appeared to be disaster struck. An awkward twist in the small room & my back seized up. While not as bad as it has been, I (Sarah) still could not stand up straight and walk without a limp. After some debate and testing of it, we decided that, at the very least, I needed to be near the [View Full Entry]

Let's chat... I guess to begin with, I would first like to talk about a phenomenon that I have noticed in my everyday life. It's about mid-October, I arrived in China at the end of August. I am becoming more than accustomed to my surroundings, this is both good and bad. Of course getting around, ordering meals, going to my classes etc. have become relatively easy so in this respect it is a good thing. On the flip side of this coin, becoming accustomed with one's surroundings can be a bit dangerous. For one, I am finding it increasingly more difficult [View Full Entry]

Holiday week falls disconcertingly early. We were just getting settled in, our first year students had just finished their mandatory two-week military training (seems to consists mostly of learning the basics of marching, popular military songs, and a little camping on the side) and had had their first week of actual classes, and then there's a holiday and it all stops for a week. Odd. So we went to Qingdao. Qingdao is a seaside city about 6 hours' train journey from Tai'an- quite a few of our students come from there. In fact, I did a quick poll of two of [View Full Entry]

As promised, more pictures and less words this time. October 1st-7th is national holiday called 黄金周 or "Huang jin zhou" or the "Golden Week." It is part of the Mid-Autumn festivities. The small vacation provided me with an opportunity to travel and work on my conversational Chinese. It was my first real experience travelling with no formal itinerary and guide. I needed to rely on my own ability to speak the language to ask directions, take cabs, book long distance buses, ferries, hotel accommodations, order food etc. At times I struggled and became a bit frustrat [View Full Entry]

Bigger than a minibus, smaller than a coach. This took us up to the halfway point and back.
Laura: "Well, look at it this way: If anyone back home asks, they won't believe what you did for National Day." Amy: "It's certainly priceless." Chris: "Definitely 'without price'..." October the 1st is China's National Day. This year the Powers that Be are making a thing of it being the last National Day before the Olympics starts. All us Foreigners were invited by the University to go on an all-expenses-paid trip up to the top of Mount Tai by bus and cable-car, see some official show thing, and have a free lunch at the Ramada afterwards. Now, as we're now officially [View Full Entry]

Thru Street on Campus
Thru Street on Campus
An empty street must mean one thing, its lunch time. During the hours of 12:00 to 2:00 pm, the campus turns into a ghost town. The students are either eating, sleeping, or studying.
So, I've come to the conclusion that mosquitoes have a natural affinity for my blood; these buggers have been relentless in their pursuit (in my opinion, the only good mosquito is a dead mosquito). There has been no other recourse but to resort to my mosquito bed net to avoid being assaulted by the buggers while I sleep. Moving onward...the past couple weeks have been quite busy for me, thus being the main reason for my blog neglection and my overwhelming sense of lethargy. Nevertheless, I have weathered the storm and finally, I have my own free time to indulge myself [View Full Entry]
