Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Shandong

Thursday, August 22, we left for our class bonding trip in China's Shandong Province. It's a six hour bus ride from Nanjing. We arrived to Tai'an city on Thursday. On Friday we visited Dai Miao, the temple of the god of Mount Tai. After lunch we climbed Mount Tai (泰山: Tài Shān) It was a hard walk up the steps but beautiful at the top. On Saturday we woke up at 5AM to watch the sunrise at the top of the moutain which was beautiful but crowded (as is everything in China). Then we moved onto Qufu, another city in the [View Full Entry]

We went to Alibaba first and that is just a pool hole because the bar is closed til friday cause a few months back some chinese guy stabbed and killed 2 Russians. It was the Russians fault and yantai is mellow as. U here of killings like once a year and its usually a pub fight. Anyway we were there for a while but because the bar was closed there were no pool tables left so we left and started walking to the centre of town. Its a nice [View Full Entry]

Confucius' village

 Asia » China » Shandong » Qufu
Qufu is famous for being the birthplace to the famous Chinese philosopher Confucius. It also houses the tomb of Confucius and as a result, plans to build a train station in the small town were scrapped on the basis that trains would disturb his tomb. Let me start with a bit of an introduction to Confucianism. Whilst Confucianism is not really a religion and more a philosophy, he is described and held in a similar kind of regard to the more religious figures. His philosophy in a nut shell describes the role of individuals within a larger group and guidelines on [View Full Entry]

Our next destination was a good old fashioned, traditional holiday destination. We were headed for the coastal town of Qingdao, which is famed for three things; it plays host to a number of China’s best beaches (for those of you who love watching sailing on TV{who doesn’t?} the Olympic sailing is taking place here), it was formerly inhabited by German’s and finally and most importantly, it is home to Tsingtao, the largest brewery in China. We arrived at the nearby train station and realised that due to China’s strange train ticketing policies (you can’t get a r [View Full Entry]
