Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

The Talents Bureau helps recruit talented foreigners to work in Shandong. The man in blue is the Big Boss. I forget his name but I gave a lovely toast to him at lunch.
I traveled to Weifang, Shandong Province again for work. I attended meetings and also got to visit some tourist spots in and around Weifang. Vanuit Qingzhou gingen we kijken naar het Internationale Vlieger Festival (Feng zheng bisai) in Weifang. Dit wordt sinds 1984 ieder jaar georganiseerd rond 20 April, op een een groot open plein op 15km ten zuidwesten van de stad. Het zou een van de grootste Internationale bijeenkomsten zijn van deze aard. In 2007 had er tezelfdertijd ook het wereldkampioenschap plaats met 20 deelnemende landen. Informatie over de precieze data en activiteiten was echter moeilijk te vinden. We namen in Weifang bus No9 en ook bus No19 om op het wedstrijdterrein te komen, beide bussen zaten wel eivol.
