A Day in Xi'an
A wonderful evening and day touring the sights of Xi'an. It's a much bigger city than I ever imagined... 8 million people in the city, 34 million in the provinces around the city.
It was a hot summers day and night. Very 'misty' as our tour guide explained (the two massive coal-fired power stations seemed to suggest it was more pollution) - so we had trouble seeing the mountains even when close up by the Terracotta Warriors. A fascinating place, buzzing with youthful energy - there are 19 universities here.
Xi'an Bell TowerRight in the centre of Xi'an, and opportise the Drum Tower, the Bell Tower was built in 1582, and restored in 1739. The bell was used to tell the time of day.
Drum TowerThe 'twin' of the Bell Tower - a stunning building in the centre of Xi'an shown at nightfall.
The Big Wild Goose PagodaAn extraordinary structure, this pagoda was built in the year 652 and is 7 stories tall. It took a couple of tries to get the moon from behind the clouds.
Public artMassive horse monument being constructed in the suburbs of Xian. Check the guy clinging to the scaffold.
The CrewMe and my work buddies - on our day off in Xi'an. This photo really shows off the immense size of the main pit housing the Terracotta Warriors.
More WarriorsWarriors neer the front of the main pit are made with great accuracy.
The Groovy WarriorThis guy must have been made by the lower skilled craftsmen and is at the back of the pit. I think he's kind of cool.
HorsesThese horses are at the back of the pit, receiving repair work.
CharriotsThe half-scale charriots were decorated with gold and jewels. This is the second of two discovered and is a model of the charriot used to carry the emperor.
Along the wallAn immense wall surrounds Xi'an. The wall is high and wide enough to walk or ride a bike around the nine miles that surround inner Xi'an
StepsSteps leading down to the courtyard in the main gate. This is my favourite photo of the day.
