I wish the pictures could show more of how the people of Shenyang get around. There are 7 million people in this city and cars, mules, mopads, bicyles and walkers all share the roads, sidewalks and any other place they can get thru. I have been in shock at how it all works, sometimes it doesn't. I have wittnessed several accidents with cabs hitting motorcyles. Not a pretty site. I have also learned that if you wittness one of these accidents it is not advisable to assist anyone because the custom is now that person belows to you along with their family. Hope you enjoy the pictures.... read more

October 14th I woke up on the floor of a hard seat coupe in a train heading to North Korea. Wet sprays stinted in my face disturbed me and I heard the old man laugh hard as it happened time after time. Down the corridor I saw the young English speaking Chinese woman washing her mother with a cloth. It was water from this cloth that had awoken me and gave the old man a humerous start to the day. This surreal scene is made even more surreal in my universe because it is my birthday and, just to clear that out of the way, this day means something to me. I am not one of those "Well it's just another day of the year" people, or the "You only get one day older" people. October ... read more

We have only been here for less than two weeks and I feel like I have been here for months, so much has happened and we haven't even began teaching. We don't start our classes for another week! In spite of the sad atmosphere of a Grandmother's death everyone was happy that she was going to a better place and unlike American attitudes she even had a birthday cake, because on her deathday she was born into anther place. I wasn't sure if I was to keep my head down and be solemn but the whole family from all over China was so happy they had an excuse to gather than the vibe was mostly cheer, lots of dinners, speeches and toasts. Reasurance from the older members of the family to the younger members "we are ... read more

Approaching a year in China, my wife and I have suddenly found ourselves as the longest serving members of the teaching department. A role that has come at impressive haste, helped by the quick departure of three other teachers, whose contracts have all ended. Like independence from the British Empire, the departures have created feelings of a new beginning. It’s also made me realise how little time my wife and I have left before we move on to pastures new. I hope the very likeable new teachers that have arrived will have more success than the three previous new arrivals, all of whom were sacked within weeks. In the English teaching profession of Asia, there is the rarest kind of teacher that one wants to meet. They are as fabled and mysterious as unicorns, dragons and ... read more

We had a 4 days holiday in historic city Shenyang. It was a relaxing holiday as the attractions are all within the city area. However, the main reason for this trip is to visit Benxi Cave in Benxi city about 1.5 hours away. In 1625, Qing dynasty’s first Emperor Nuerhachi made Shenyang city his capital. We visited his imperial palace on the first day. The palace together with the one in Beijing is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site. The Shenyang Imperial Palace was used by the imperial family till their conquest of China in 1644. This palace is much smaller than the imperial palace in Bejing. The architectural is a combination of Chinese and Manchu styles. The Hall of Great Affairs is where the emperor ascends the throne, held his “meeting” and review “parades”. ... read more

This Blast from the Past is being written 18 months after the fact based on notes I made at the time. I have tried to make the comments reflect what we were thinking at the time. Of course, we are now so much more familiar with China that some of the events seem quite different in hind sight. But then what doesn’t? The start of the journey I have mentioned previously that the wife of one of the teachers is Chinese and runs a travel agency. Dianne had picked out a bunch of places she (I mean, we) wanted to see and went to visit Fairy to arrange transportation and accommodation. She introduced us to the concept of hiring a driver. She recommended “Jack” who speaks almost no English but is a very safe driver. For ... read more
