Nanjing (Nanking), the capital of Jiangsu dates back to the 5th century BC - the beginning of the Warring States Period (403 - 221 BC). It was the capital of the Southern dynasties between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD.

Nanjing is the site of Japan's most brutal aggression during World War II. Japanese troops arrived in Nanjing in December 1937, and of the rapes, burning & looting of houses & historical relics and the slaughtered some 300,000 Chinese within 6 weeks ! A death toll exceeding that of the atomic blasts of Hiroshima & Nagasaki combined. Over 20,000 cases of rape were reporeted, including gang rapes followed by execution. Those who survived ended up as Japanese Imperial Army "comfort women". The brutallity is unimaginable .... The Japanese, including government officials , have persistently denied the magnitude of the massacre, and Japanese textbooks refer to the massacre as a "minor incident". Many books have been written about this, one of it is The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang.

Nanjing is considered one of the "three furnaces" of China besides Chongqing & Wuhan. If i may add, another furnace would be Turpan in Xinjiang province 😊
