Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

This Week

Monday I started to feel a little sick. We all have some weird stomach thing so it makes it really hard to eat and leave the house. So we have been taking it easy. However Tuesday was the Holiday of the Mid-Autumn festival. This is the day where the moon is the most round and friends and families gather to look and the moon and think of one another. Sarah and I had been invited to celebrate with our friend Bai Hua, the grad student who stopped Sarah and we had dinner with him and his sister two weeks ago. So [View Full Entry]

Climbing the wall is hard!

The one word that I remembered in Chinese prior to my return to China was jiaozi, or dumplings. From Day One, it has been our quest to find more and more jiaozi. We have found it in restaurants, frozen at the supermarket, and on the street. You can have it filled with the traditional pork and cabbage, pork and lotus root, egg and tomato (or the “breakfast jiaozi” as wee like to call it), spinach, onion, shrimp, chicken, beef. These little pockets can be filled with just about everything. We have had them steamed, pan fried and even deep-fried. Last Friday, [View Full Entry]

Susie still looks better. :) I am excited to keep the back short and let the front grow.
If you are ever in China, get your haircut. I know this seems like an odd recommendation for foreign travel, but trust me. It is amazing. I will fully admit that I was planning on growing my hair out for the entire year because I had heard horror stories from people on previous Asian Terms. The Chinese hairdressers were not used to cutting non-Chinese hair so they got butchered. Katie and Alexes were both talking about how they had heard that it was a great experience. After that, I opened my mind to the idea of getting a haircut…eventually. About 24 [View Full Entry]

Rack 'Em Up, Dan!
Rack 'Em Up, Dan!
We didn't have a triangle, so we had to try to push the balls together and shoot really fast, before they had a chance to start rolling away all willy nilly!
There is a terribly sagging and decrepit old pool table in the courtyard outside our apartments. We decided that we needed to play some Drew Carey style outdoor pool. We were able to find some balls and a piece of PVC pipe to use as a cue. After a few minutes of getting used to the table (which had more ups and downs than most mini-golf courses) and our makeshift cue, Bunny came by and showed us where to find a REAL cue. We were playing with the big boys now J Most of the netting in each hole that was [View Full Entry]

I made her wear this birthday hat i brought from home.
Alexes' birthday was the 22nd so we had a weekend long celebration for both of us. Friday we had two of laura's students come over and one of their mothers cooked jiao zi, dumplings, for us. It was a great home cooked meal. Then we went over to Hankou, across the river, and we went to the Blue sky bar, its a western bar. We ended up getting these little keg things and drank there all night. Our guard locks the gate at 11pm so we decided to stay out until it opened at 5am. We also found a 24 hour [View Full Entry]

Night Market
Night Market
You name it, they'll eat it.
This entry is a special tribute to all of my friends at work who were asking about what kind of food I would be eating in China. Are you ready for this? Last night we finally went to the night market that is just down the street from the East Gate. It is a huge hangar sized room filled with rows and rows of little grill stations surrounded by little wooden tables. Just like everything else in China, these food purveyors all seemed to have pretty much the same foods to offer. Upon entering, I noticed the wriggling bags made of [View Full Entry]

Our Dinner
Our Dinner
You know it is fresh...

After two weeks of bonding with our own little insulated group of six from Augie, we finally welcomed our 7th and final member of the gang. Alexes had to come late due to her brother’s nuptials. All of a sudden, there was a new dynamic to the group. I finally felt like we were complete; this was the set of people that I would do everything with for the next year. Then, we actually started making friends. We had gone out for dinner for Alexes’ homecoming and Dan, Nick and I were going to look for a DVD shop on our [View Full Entry]

They were rocking so hard they are blurry.
Saturday night, we headed back to VOX to check out the live music scene. We paid the 25 kwai cover charge on a leap of faith (there was terrible screaming metal steaming down the stairs). We got upstairs and ordered a round of beers. The place was totally different than the quiet Indie-cent Thursday night. The tables that had filled the main floor were nowhere to be seen and bodies packed the area in front of the stage (which would soon become a Chinese mosh-pit with a few half naked western guys spinning like possessed tops). We found Steian and he [View Full Entry]
