turtle and bits, ready to eat
prepacked turtle, ready to go Next entry,
So, I'm lying here recovering from an absolutely terrible beijiu hangover...but we'll come to that... Yesterday we decided that having bikes would definitely be worth it, so we decided to go to carrefour and buy bikes, apparently carrefour has literally everything! We ended up wandering around carrefour for ages and finding some pretty interesting things, including turtles, frogs and deer penis...very weird. The bikes there were actually way too small for us, which was annoying, but we had a good explore and then because our chinese friend nick was with us we decided we'd continue our pursuit of bicycles in one of the market areas of the city.
We caught tuktuks there and ended up in a pretty rundown area of haikou. There were loads of small shops all competing with each other and loads and loads of Chinese people shopping/lounging about there. Nick knew where a bike shop was, so he went there first, with us hanging back so that the guys owning the bike shop didn't give us 'waiguo' prices (prices for foreigners). Nick came back for us a few minutes later and walked us to the shop...passing a woman chopping up a dog with
live turtles
live turtles that can be bought...this aspect of china i do not like... a massive cleaver, which was interesting. We ended up bargaining with the bike people for quite a while, and eventually parted with quite nice bikes for relatively cheap, between £26 and £30. Now it was time to get back...Nick, not having a bike, caught a tuktuk, and we followed him through the crazy Chinese street system on our bikes. This was interesting! Weaving through traffic and shouting at random Chinese people was a large part of it, with lots of Chinese people shouting 'hello' and 'laowai' (not so nice). We eventually made it back and decided it was time for a short siesta, before heading out again for dinner with Nick again.
Pete had found a nice place to eat at earlier, but when we got out of nanmen, there was a big crowd of people watching a band perform outside a restaurant, it transpired that this restaurant was opening for the first time, and to get attention, they had hired a band to play on the street. We decided that it would be good fun to go there instead, as it'd probablybe quite good fun! The inside of the restaurant was very loud and quite smoky with big
New Restaurant
the opening of a new restaurant needs a very loud band, and plenty of alcohol... tables for between 6-10 people, and we sat down and studied the surrounding tables. It was obvious that pretty much everyone there was absolutely steaming drunk, and one particular table had about 3 bottles of beijiu going at any one time, with toasts to all kinds of things every few minutes. Nick, after overhearing some of their conversation explained to us that one of the guys there was the head of Chinese military police, and that another was the boss of the restaurant, and they were both steaming drunk...
I proceeded to take a couple of videos of them, and a few pictures aswell, and that seemed to get their attention. Then next thing I know, one of the guys came over with a bottle of beijiu and a couple of shot glasses and asks me to drink with them! So we had a toast at our table and then he went back to their table. Nick explained to me that it was polite for me to go back with an empty glass and ask to drink with them again, so thats what i did... Pretty much it ended up with Pete and me drinking beijiu with the head
at the bar
our little group at the bar! of Chinese armed police, and toasting each other, and the boss of the restaurant, it was all quite weird... We then proceeded to take half full bottles of beijiu from the tables of people who had already left, and go round to different tables toasting people, and generally making new friends. We also both got the
We finally left this place at about 10 30 all quite tipsy, and headed over to haikou's 'bar street'. Once there we bought 24 bottles of beer and tried to teach Chinese people how to play drinking games, which was a bit of a success...it seems that in china you don't have a big beer, you have a really small glass and when you drink it you pretty much down the whole thing, this means much more toasts, and you drink much more beer.
We finally got home at about 1am and I think I passed out...Pete threw up in his bathroom, and we slept until about midday! Wer now planning to cycle to the beach, which should be fun! I'll tell you how that goes in the next entry!!!
