Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Rites of Passage Asia » China » Guizhou » Kaili
Hello from San Du in Guizhou Province. We had a lovely break in Guanling to see the waterfalls, and stayed with a very friendly family. The eldest lad was teaching himself English from the internet and doing well. He wanted to know about our journey and after seeing our family photos on the blog, with the garden in the background, he looked at Ockbrook on Google-Earth. His dad gave us a lift to the waterfalls. It was a bit of a hairy ride, though interesting to see the view from the other side of a windscreen. Since then, we have moved [View Full Entry]

Your asia correspondents calling from Guanling, to the north-east of Kunming. Since we last spoke we cycled back down to Kunming, via some good roads and through fine scenery. We then headed east, visiting the Stone Forest at Shilin. Not petrified or fossilised forest as you might expect, but weirdly-eroded stone formations. The local Yi people have woven some of the formations into their mythology and have ascribed names to them, such as "Petrified Woman waiting for Husband", though the likenesses are not immediately apparent. Or apparent full stop. You may judge for yourselves once I g [View Full Entry]

Dear reader, to give you a taste of life on the road in China... Wednesday 10th October. We haul ourselves from bed at around 7 o'clock, and start the packing up process. We fill water bottles and eat cakes, fruit and sweet fortified milk, bought the previous evening, as a precursor to breakfast. Next a visit to the local market, to restock with fruit and snacks for the day ahead, and to search out steamed stuffed dumpings to complete breakfast. And then the climb over into the next valley begins. The road today winds for about 40 km in a series [View Full Entry]

Hello gente, Just writing a quick note to let those who by some stroke of fate might be thinking about me and whether or not i'm still alive or lost out in the world. I assure you i am thriving and quite alive, just busy out my ears lately, and by lately, i mean all the time. i apologise for not writing for a good long while, and if things quiet down or i feel i've made enough language progress then perhaps i'll write an update summarising all of the crasiness and interesting things that have been taking place in my [View Full Entry]

A water feature during a drought
As seen from our hotel room window
With our ultimate destination next being Kunming, we had 2 routes to get there - either through Sanjiang and Liuzhou, or through Kaili. For various reasons, Sanjiang was our preferred waypoint but, at 9:30AM when neither the 7:30AM nor 8:30AM buses to Sanjiang had come through (supposedly the only morning options), we felt forced to change our plans. Buses to Congjiang and Kaili took up the rest of the day, with uncomfortable hours of traditional music on the DVD player pitched somewhere in the screeching range. The next day we boarded a sleeper train for Kunming and, 14 hours later, were [View Full Entry]

The Dong show Asia » China » Guizhou » Zhaoxing
An early start saw us pootling out of Sanjiang in a bus packed with the usual mix of smokers and chunderers. It was clear when we passed from the province of Guangxi into the richer province of Guizhou, as the road suddenly became tarmaced. Shortly after entering Guizhou, there was an interesting incident that made both of us wish we could speak Mandarin. A group of men got on the bus, 2 of whom started a loud and protracted argument that eventually several other passengers joined in. Suddenly a pack of cards was produced, and there was a mad scramble by [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well. (this is Brigid by the way) Anyhow just quick note to say what we have been up to. We are teaching 5 days a week about 15hr to 18hr all different ages and levels. Teaching is fun and I am getting used to it. The school is ok but the investor can be a very tight pocketed. As a result the resources are not great and the Chinese staff get paid fuck all. This is a shame because everyone works hard but I suppose from what I have seen business in [View Full Entry]
