Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Helloooooooo! Quite a lot has happened since we set out from sleepy Wokingham on Sunday 16th August 2009, so we shall try to be concise! After 33 hours of travelling, we arrived at the Lizard Lounge, Yangshuo where The Company (which shall remain nameless just in case we could get fired) is based. The Lizard Lounge is exactly how you would expect it to be (sans actual lizards) - we were greeted with free drinks by half a dozen dozy climbers and took up a seat on the bouldering mat (part of the indoor bouldering wall) and looked on in dazed [View Full Entry]

China and Beyond X - Nanning Asia » China » Guangxi » Nanning
After my brief day trip to Beihai on the Gulf of Tonkin, I bussed back to Nanning and grabbed a taxi into the city. The drivers at the bus depot are not so picky and greedy as those at the airport and it was easy to find one that didn't mind the casual drive into the ' old city ' on the metered rate. As we drove through the new section, I remembered my drive in the previous night and my mind went back to Chongqing and the lights on the buildings. It was such a wonderful sight to see the [View Full Entry]

As I move on from Chongqing to Nanning, I recall what I said of Chengdu...that it absorbed me and excepted me regardless of my place of origin and my language. Chongqing was not so kind...I had to try to become one of it's sons....I ordered seafood dumplings ( being a ' seafood/fish only/vegetarian ' type of an eater ) and I repeated at least five times ... " seafood.." reply.. ' yes ' ... " seafood.. " ' yes ' ... yet in my very first taste, there was the distinct taste, smell and texture of pork. After years and years [View Full Entry]

Role Reversal, Gongcheng Town, Guangxi Province, China Monday, 1st June 2009 As I stood in front of my suitcase, I selected each item with careful precision and conscious thought. Dress to impress. Think leader. Think inspirer. Think confident. Think in control. Think teacher. My nerves were definitely getting the better of me. I had never really had ‘a way’ with children, and like cats I’m sure they smelled fear! As a laid my clothes out ready for the morning, I put my class notes to the side and climbed into bed, nervously anticipating what lay ahead. One of only four selected [View Full Entry]

The plan was to go to the rice terraces at Ping´an. Although I heard Ping´an is very touristic and the rice terraces near the village of Dazhai were better, I wanted to go there because I thought it would be much harder to get a bus up to that village. From there, my plan was to walk to Dazhai and experience that part. In Guilin I had to find a bus to Longsheng, from which I would take the last bus. In front of the ticket office, I met three people that were also going to Longsheng and from there to [View Full Entry]

(h2)Om mani padme hum - or; bring me a shotgun!(/h2) In February, I bought a book. “Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos”. During the whole semester, it has been fighting for place in between of the fat, uninspiring Chinese grammar books. The original plan was to make use of this book in March. But somehow, I felt so happy about being back in China after my work-holiday in Norway - why go anywhere? I dislike tropical landscapes. Or maybe not really dislike. But I find them less intriguing than the vast steppes of Siberia, the crisp, shivering air in the Central Asian [View Full Entry]
