Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Wanderlust

Guilin is touted as China's most dreamlike Karst scenery and it didn't dissapoint. Dr. Seuss- like mountains surround the Li River as it winds from Guilin to Yangshuo. After a couple days in Xian we were looking for a retreat from the city and opted to hop on the four hour Li River Cruise first thing in the morning. It was the right call as we witnessed all kinds of vistas we wouldn't have encountered on land. Interestingly, water buffalo/oxtail could be seen swimming in the river to cool their thick hide throughout the journey. Perhaps the coolest site though is [View Full Entry]

Without question we left Vietnam with a positive feeling, but we were definately ready to continue on with our adventure. It was for this reason we dedicated a couple of days of missioning to get well into China: our schedule: 5am - leave Ha Giang 11am - arrive in Hanoi (At first we were upset to hear that we had to spend the night here due to buses etc. but to our surprise treated us well this visit and we actaully changed our opinion and found Hanoi quite a charming city to spend a couple of hours!!) following day - [View Full Entry]

On the River Li
On the River Li
One of hundreds of boats each day, offering visitors a banquet of natural wonders, the karst hills, in modern comfort during a 6 hr. cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo.
In a new China, GUILIN is among the first of a multitude of blossoming cities. With spectacular historical and natural attractions these continue to host millions of perplexed and enchanted visitors, from every corner of the world, daily. China's doors and windows have been opened wide, and the winds of change are strong. Could any of them ever be closed to the world again? To help keep them from closing, tens of thousands of the world's business-(wo)men are visible in the mega-cities of the PRC, and they are settling down for the long-term, while hords of the world's trourists venture [View Full Entry]

This is just... Words are hard to find to explain
Well, we have finnally made it to, as the title says, the 'Picturesque' China I had hoped for. With weird green moutain formations, little villages, and lots and lots and lots of tourist information centers (almost none speak english and they are all selling the same thing: 'Boat cruise down the Li River...'; its too bad that when we really need them they turn out to be this way). But it ok, I think we got ourselves a resonably priced boat and if the man shows up with a boat then its all good. We got to Guilin this morning [View Full Entry]

Sixth part (drinking)

 Asia » China » Guangxi » Guilin
A subject I haven't quite touched yet is the sweet comsuming of alcohol. And this is certinately due to the fact that not much has happened so far, that differs from what we are used to back in Denmark. But last night we met a dutch and british guy, had some beers and watched a crappy movie (the groomsmen, please don't watch it). After the dvd stopped working (they usally do in every movie) we decided to go to a bar of a sort. We got a recommendation from the receptionist, and found the bar about half an hour later. I left Hong Kong on May 27th; I took the train from Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, for about forty five minutes to La Wu, the end of the line in Hong Kong. I walked through the border crossing to the Chinese mainland into the city of Shenzhen. Shenzhen is part of the newly formed "Special Economic Zone"straddling the Hong Kong Border, the city has been recently transformed from a simple fishing village to one of the richest cities in China, thus enticing a diverse mix people, from businessmen to illegal immigrants, creating an extreme imbalance of wealth and poverty, which [View Full Entry]

Seven Star Park, Guilin
Tess, Chock & Luke Camel Hill, Guilin

As described to you in our first blog from Yangshuo, this place was quite the adventure! We woke up on day 2, sore as hell from the biking and massages from the previuos day, but ready for some more thrill-seeking and fun in Yangshuo. We decided to sleep in a little bit and try to get some of that relaxing in that we assumed we'd be doing in Yangshuo the entire time we were there (yeah, right). So, had a late(r) morning than normal, and walked into town for some breakfast. We stopped at a place run by some American [View Full Entry]
