After the disappointment of the somewhat wasted detour to the Huashan cliff murals, I fortunately had better luck at my next destination. After another several hour ride and overnighter at another non-descript mid-sized city called Daxin, I took yet another early minivan ride, this time back westwards to the border with Vietnam again (though further north from where I crossed) at the very edge where the world's second largest transnational waterfall lay - the Detian Falls.
And yes I know you're wondering - the largest is the well-known Niagara Falls. And while the Detian Falls don't quite match up in terms of sheer size and impressiveness, they are still extremely picturesque, crashing down multiple tiers and from a height of some 70m. It was also a little strange looking across the river to the opposite bank where Vietnam lay, and reflecting over how I was there just days ago. Following my accidental experience of momentary illegal entry/re-entry in the blurred lines of the No Man's Land between the two countries at the border crossing, I couldn't help but be reminded of how porous official border demarcations can be, and even how arbitrarily they are drawn, sometimes merely contingent on the

Yes that's the perplexing name bestowed upon this tomb-like protusion. It marks Chinese victory over French-occupied Vietnam in some war many years ago though, if my reading of the Chinese write-up is correct at all. whims and fancies of natural obstacles and boundaries.
