Guangdong Travel Blogs

Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Backpacks and Shoes

 Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou
I am officially one year older - I'm finally 24. Those of you who know me may be thinking. "How did you skip a year? We thought you were 23!" But here in China I was 23 when I got here so now I'm 24. However old I may be I am, and always will be, a day older. So what did I do on my birthday? I went and did a bit more shopping - as that's what Hong Kong is best for. But unfortunately I wasn't feeling good for the most of the morning. I checked my e-mail in [View Full Entry]

China - Day 3

 Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou
Got up early, Dat-suk’s wife made noodles for breakfast and then we went to the train station. Everyone went to see us off. Almost missed the train to Guangzhou. We went with Yee-ling to see her school at Guangzhou University. Very impressive, large, new, takes up a whole island. She showed us around the part of the campus where she studies and then we had lunch. Got the train back to Kowloon, had dinner at Goo-poh’s. Her sons and family came over and it was Goo-poh’s oldest son’s daughter’s birthday. Went out to Tsim Tsa Tsui, walked around awhile, had a [View Full Entry]

China - Day 2

 Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou
Had dim sum with the whole family at the same restaurant as the night before. We made the rounds, visiting each aunt and uncle’s house and her aunt’s small garment factory below her house. We went into Changping town with Felicia’s cousins, Yee-ling and Wai-ling, and hit a couple malls. We had tea at OC Revolving Restaurant, 30 storeys up, and traditional Chinese small fare and sweets at a dessert shop. The whole family had dinner together at the restaurant and went back to Dat-suk’s to visit. Felicia played mahjong with her aunts and uncles. [View Full Entry]

Little temple I found while climbing Dinghushan with a Laughing Buddha
I'm sitting in the lobby of a five star hotel. No, I'm not staying here - I wouldn't pay that kind of money for a room - I'm simply sitting here. Lobbies like these simply act as resting places for the well dressed. And being white I could walk in here wearing almost anything I liked - besides beggar clothes or my birthday suit. I came in to use the bathroom but I have a whole hour to waste and nothing to really do. Yesterday it rained - all day - and not what I used to call "Chinese rain" that [View Full Entry]

China - Day 1

 Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou
Got the bus to the train station and had dim sum with Goo-poh in a nearby restaurant. Took the early afternoon train to Dongguan, China, about an hour's ride. Felicia's Dat-suk (dad's youngest brother) met us at the station and we got a taxi back to his house. He later told Felicia that he wouldn't have recognized her, since it had been over 5 years since the last visit. Luckily, Goo-poh told Dat-suk to look for the tall guailo (white guy, or literally, “ghost guy”). Over the years Felicia’s dad had already got the family used to foreigners because he would [View Full Entry]

Traveling?

 Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou
People running here and there with luggage. Men sitting and simply staring at me with no intent in their eyes of stopping, smells of entire chickens being eaten on a stick, signs flashing here and there "Guangzhou is our home. Come back soon" even though buses are being loaded. Announcements going out almost every second in both Cantonese and English but the roar from the crowd is too loud for me to make out anything aside from "Ladies and Gentlemen. May Ihave your attention please?" Followed by a lot of mumbling. TV screens the size of a normal house TV announcing [View Full Entry]

This is how they do the head massage and shampoo down South.
Sitting here with my feet on top of my shoes. For a person who used to love not wearing shoes at all in this kind of weather it's rough to wear and walk around in sandals all day - not that they're bad shoes. They're some of my best and most comfortable shoes. My hair feels nice on the back of my neck. Paul just took me to get a head massage at the best Salon in Daliang (not to be confused with Dalian as the only difference in spelling is the g in English but the characters are completely different). Playing with Swords
This is an old man I found doing some sort of Taichi in the Yuexiu park in Guangzhou. If you look you can see the sword in his hand.
Guangzhou is to the west of America as Dalian is to the east. People in Guangzhou are relaxed and take time in their lives to truly spend freely. People in Dalian are busy - never have time to do anything but study and work. Guangzhou is full of greenery and has water running through it. Dalian has no greenery and has water running on two sides of it. These are some of the observances I've made today as I have traveled around Guandong a little bit - to parts of Guangzhou, Foshan and Daliang. This morning after getting ready for the [View Full Entry]

Passengers for the flight CZ6543 to Shanghai. This flight has been delayed due to the accuedrop. The new departure time will be announced later. Over and over, each flight is announced until the people around me begin to recite the phrase and laugh at each others rote memorization of the passage. Two hours ago I came for my flight. Eli's visit occasioned some new eating options, one of his favorites was this Muslim noodle place around the corner from our digs. Hand cut noodle pieces in a tomato sauce was the favorite!
It has been almost three weeks since I have last been able to put together an entry. The activity level has increased, we have each made some out of town trips, and we have had some more visitors to help us out in our efforts. This past weekend I went to Hong Kong for some professional visits. One of our students was presenting the outline of her research at a conference for Hong Kong and Mainland students. She worked with Ellen on the project (a small bit with me as well) and won the award in her category. She was very [View Full Entry]
