Hi All, I dusted of the museum walk whilst looking around The Mausoleum of The Nanyue King. First though an exhibition of ceramic pillows, which really look like a form of torture. A cousin of the Emperor was sent south in around 200BC to quell a rebellion. The cousin liked it so much that he stayed and made his own kingdom and called himself an Emperor. There's a splendid jade funeral suit, one of which I've also seen in Zhengzhou. His concubines were buried as a sacrifice along with some servants too. Hi All, I think I may have walked a little too far yesterday as my legs were aching today. A short ferry ride away, over the Pearl River, from my hostel is Shamian Island. This is a man made island. As with a lot of the older buildings in this part of China they all date from the European colonization of Asia. This part of the city was given as a concession to The British and The French after the 2nd Opium Wars. Britain had long been illegally importing opium into China, as the Emperor made it illegal towards the end of the 18th Century. In the early 19th century the Qing government finally put a stop to the trade by blockading Guangzhou and burning the opium. The British furious at the loss of income sent ... read more

Av Cadence. 75rpm Elevation: m up; M down Calories burned : 4693 Interesting day. Departed in showers which turned the road work to mud, so ended up splattered, just after I cleaned the bike. The road was slippery in parts and the rain relentless for the first 3 hours. Road in a group to lunch. My trip notes became wet so at lunch needed to transcribe a new set. Foto's geven nog meer impressie van ons leven in China dan alleen woorden. Vind daarom meer foto's. Mijn oma was afgelopen jaar overleden. Ik ben mee geweest om haar graf te bezoeken. Haar graf was niet meer dan een hoop aarde. Dat komt door het gebrek aan grond. Daarom worden in deze provincie alle gestorven mensen gecremeerd en op een officiële aangewezen plaatsen bijgezet of gewoon thuis neergezet. Mijn familie heeft haar as dus als nog in de grond gezet. Er werd eten en drinken meegebracht. Om de beurt gooit een familielid thee voor haar graf, alsof je een kop thee met haar drinkt. Het Internet Google en Facebook zijn verboden. Deze worden geblokkeerd door een grote firewall van de overheid, die wel eens de Chinese muur van het internet wordt genoemd. Het internet is dan ook vrij traag als je websites wilt bekijken van buiten China. Maar binnen China is het internet snel. Ik kijk elk avond HD films direct van het internet. Nieuws en politiek Afgelopen week was het jaarlijkse bijeenkomst van het parlement van China. De regering legt dan het beleid uit voor het komend jaar. Wat me opviel is dat ik geen toespraak van de president van China, Xi Jinping, heb gehoord. Je ziet de president wel praten maar de nieuwslezer vat de boodschap samen voor de kijkers.
