Today was our first day of class! I didn't do much in the morning, but catch up on reading that I haven't been able to do the past three years. Then in the afternoon we had three hours of intense language class. We learned how to ask and answer such phrases as "How do you do?" and "How is your health?". Our teacher also went through the Mandarin pronouns, phonetics, and numbers. The most difficult part was learning the tones. At this point I felt as if we were all taking voice lessons. The teacher would "sing" the sounds to us, then we would "sing" what we heard back. However what we would "sing" back never seemed to be correct, even if we couldn't tell the difference between what she said and we said. It ... read more

The last couple of days have been at times exhilirating and at times trying. Beijing is quite a city and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. Let me explain... Yesterday we took a long walk across Tian'anmen Square. It was a huge, wide-open space where the people of the city come to relax, sell their wares and generally mooch around. However, thoughts of 1989 echo through your mind as you picture the lone student standing firm against the tank that just wouldn't let him pass but also wouldn't kill him. I felt a real mixture of emotions being there: like it was the most amazing thing to be stood there in a country so far from home and culturally so very different, yet at the same time to feel guilty about my so-called ... read more

So today was my day of rest. The only place I went to was church, but even that was adventure enough to write about. It started out with one of the girls from another China Abroad group that had been going to a church since she got here and wanted to know if anyone from our group wanted to join her. It ended up that five of us piled into a cab and took a 15 minute ride to this nondenominational church. Apparently, due to governmental laws in China, the only people who can openly practice Christianity, are those who are foreign. As a result the church was underground, below an office building with no signs signaling that there was any type of religious facility in the area. Then at the door of the room ... read more

Right Ok so me and Rachel have finaly landed after what seems like 3 weeks on a plane. The word knackered can not even come near. We checked in to the Chongwenmen Hostel. Well I was a bit dissapointed actually as I have never seen a hostel like it. It was brilliant, clean, comfortable, tv, working toilet, resturant and best of all no bugs at all(well any that you can make out with the natural eye). Meet up with the rest of the group that evening for a group meeting. The meeting place was in STARBUCKS!!!! I know what a cop out bloody Starbuck as our first taste of this brilliant city. Anyway after the shock of that our keader went through a few things about the Chinese way of life. Below I have listed but ... read more

From Shanghai we headed straight to Beijing. By this stage, our travels in China were starting to feel like a city tour as all we seemed to be seeing was congestion and high rise buildings. Beijing is huge and already undergoing a lot of contruction and maintence in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. In fact, we even saw a massive coundown clock, counting the years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds until the olympics starts! It was great to see Thomas again and he was very hospitable. I would also count Beijing to be one of the main highlights for me for the number of historical and world renowned places there are to visit. We only had four days... but then we only had a month in China. Will have to go again for sure. I ... read more

It's the weekend! In our program, we get the weekends pretty much to ourselves. So today several of us decided to go to the Beijing aquarium, supposedly the largest aquarium in the world. The catch was that in order to get into the aquarium, you had to go through the Beijing Zoo. No big deal, right? Well, the reputation of the zoo is that you can hear the animals cry as you walk through it. Fortunately, of the four of us that went one of us knew how to speak basic Chinese and got us safely to the zoo. The zoo part was very much like a park with plenty of trees and benches and a pond in the middle. Then we saw why the zoo has such a poor reputation. The whole zoo was ... read more

Today we toured the city of Beijing. All ten of us students, plus our guide, and the driver piled into a 12 seater van this morning. The ride alone was an adventure, there do not seem to be too many rules to the driving game on Beijing's streets. There is no such thing as "pedestrians always have the right of way", it's more like "travel at your own risk" no matter if you are a pedestrian, bicycler, or automotive operator. Our first stop was HouHai park. Here we walked around the lake. It was very much a tourist destination with lots of bars all around the water and little boats in which people could take a ride. Here we saw old men playing mahjong, a game that kind of looks like dominoes. Then we walked ... read more

Let's bypass breakfast. You know the spiel. On the way to the Emperial Summer Palace we drove by where all the opening ceremonies for the Olympics and track and field will take place. They have started work on it and it is amazing. I have a picture but the haze today was very thick and the picture was taken from the bus. It looks like a HUGE birds nest. It is not completed yet, but it is enough so that it is impressive. After that we went to a silk rug factory where the process for creating silk rugs by hand was demonstrated. Of course, there was shopping opportunities. A high quality rug can take a couple of years for three women working continually to complete. A friend I have met on the trip was looking ... read more

I don't like to be negative in my blogs, especially not at the beginning of an entry but we didn't exactly have the best of starts to our time in Beijing. Are you sitting comfortably? Let me begin... First off, our flight out of Hong Kong wasn't until nearly 5pm but we had to check out of the hostel by 10am. We were both quite happy to go as we'd spent enough time looking at the inside our our room while I was recovering from my bout of flu. Thankfully the medicine was doing it's thing and I was feeling far better though still not quite up to my usual standards. As a result, we decline the hostel's offer to mind our bags so we could spend some last minute time enjoying Hong Kong, and instead ... read more
