So we have finally made it... and it sure was a long drawn out trip. Originally we were to arrive in Beijing at 9pm but due to delays we didn't arrive until after 11 or so. The worst part was we were not aware of the delay until after everyone had already boarded the plane at 7:50pm so that made for a bit of an uncomfortable waiting period of 2 1/2 hours. To add to that, I was sandwiched between a Korean mand and Chinese woman and not sitting next to Adele:( Adele was in the middle seat across from me with a very kind western man who was helping her with our plans... thank you sier! I was a little jealous of this man making plans with Adele instead of me:). But, it just so ... read more

Today we headed out of the city to the Great Wall of China. It was mind blowing. The climb was totally exhausting and difficult. I do not recommend the climb for older people or people with difficulty walking, during the June - July time of year. It was very hot and humid. I would have thought they would have picked a better location for people to view and have an easier access to the wall. The saying in China is even if you take one step, you are a man. After climbing for an hour, I would hope I'm a giant of a man.... read more

I got my LSAT score today - 170. Not as good as I'd expected or hoped, but good nonetheless. The train to Beijing from Shanghai was annoying - we had a family in our room and the kid kept waking up and screaming all night long. Ugh. But I ate some of the first Western food this morning I've had in China since I've been here, and it was a welcome treat. Right now I'm with Mike and Chuck - we're about to go meet up and get lunch with Treu, and then off to the Temple Of Heaven.... read more

Greetings from China!! Saying farewell to Korea was bitter sweet and of course I cried..(shocking I know)..we grabbed one last subway sandwich and headed off to the airport. I felt like we we're going to pick someone up again but it was finally our turn to go this time! The trip started off on the wrong foot when our flight to Beijing was delayed for a couple of hours but they didn't tell us until we were already buckled in on the plane!! so 2 hours later we left the runway and an hour and a half later we were in China!! It was after midnight and the previous night we had had only 2 hours of sleep and we just wanted to go to bed! BUT we got taken to the wrong hostel and ended ... read more

arriving after yet another night train to China‘s capital our first impression was that this is the most crowded place we have been to。 There were thousands of people in the station。 Add to that the heat and humidity and our first instinct was to buy a ticket out of there imidiatly!too bad we did not follow our intuition。。。 We were actually very excited to travel to Beijing。After 2 months in China we wanted to see the center of activity。 Seeing the biggest palaces, the highest buildings, the nicest places of the great-wall。 We were also looking forward to eating in good restaurants and generally resting。 It took us 2 hours in Beijing traffic (and too much money for a taxi because we were kicked out of the bus for some reason) to arrive to ... read more

Now that I have been here one week, I am no longer running into many firsts and many of my firsts are becoming everyday events. So now I would like to direct my writing to some of the more subtle differences I have noticed in Beijing, as compared to my normal surroundings in the United States. The first subject I would like to talk about is with respect to the sidewalks in Beijing. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of a sidewalk as of yet, but I am sure I will be able to get one without much trouble in the near future. The sidewalks in Beijing are all brick tile in various colors, with a yellow rubbery path following the inside of every sidewalk (as opposed to the outside next to the street). Now the ... read more

So the morning started early, as most have been here, not having luck sleeping in with the heat here. I had talked with host about directions, but could not find them, so off I went cold turkey. I had gotten a tip online of a good starting point, but it turned out to not be much of a time, but a good way to kill an hour in the Beijing metro. I then found myself at T-square and the office of a "great wall" booking agency for buses going to the many sites of the great wall. From Beijing, there are 3 areas that are popular to go to, and apparently the section I wished to see was number 3 on the list, and only arranged on weekends. So, with no chinese, and very little english ... read more

This was the first full day in Beijing. A good word to describe Beijing is the Crane City. Major construction is going on for the 2008 Olympic. There is traffic, traffic and more traffic. We had an early start today. After breakfast at the hotel, the first stop was a trip to Tiananmen Square (the largest public square in the world) and the Forbidden City on the other side of the boulevard. The Forbidden City was the home for 24 Ming and Qing Dynasty emperors who ruled China for over 500 years. The Forbidden City also has the largest and most intact conglomeration of ancient structures of the imperial palace. The main palace is under going renovation (as is all of Beijing for the 2008 Olympics). But we were able to see the other palaces and ... read more

Hello everyone, I am writing first to check if this is going to work, hopefully figure out exactly what I need to do in order to produce an exciting blog you will want to read and how to send them. It is 1 day before our adventure starts and I have had and continue to have a mixture of feelings... scared, anxious, nervous, excited, etc etc. We are flying into Beijing for our first few days to do some shopping, sight seeing, climbing the Great Wall and from there taking some buses and trains and whatever other mode of transportation will get us to Tibet! We are trying to be spontaneous and just going with the flow of things but at the same time we have limited time so things will take shape once we get ... read more

Our last day in Beijing has been one of the best so far. It's been a busy, varied and more of a 'Glynn and Jude' type day than we've had in a while. We started off later than planned but were relieved to see the skies were hazy and the temperature wasn't as hot as yesterday, so I decided to get my legs out for only the third time this trip and trundle around in shorts for the day. Our first stop was at the covered market which we found completely by accident. We noticed as we were walking down a major thoroughfare that there were lots of beauty stores around and being in desperate need of deodorant, we thought this might be our best bet. Now deodorant is a hard thing to come by in ... read more
