My class and I went to an art school/college yesterday. Our bus was driving through the gates when we noticed a digital sign out the front of the school saying ‘Welcome Cairns Hinterland students’. Then as we were getting off the bus I pointed out a printed sign that had our faces and a written welcome on it. The school had a large cemented courtyard with several basketball hoops. One of the teachers at the art school took us into a classroom. A couple of students, maybe two years older than us, were sitting at looms. Every student had sketched out a pattern on a piece of material that they were embroidering. All of their works were absolutely amazing. I really hope we can have embroidering lessons at our school because I aspire to be able ... read more

So tomorrow we start our journey back home to Australia! It’s really sad that this experience is over. It’s been so amazing and I’m so lucky to have been able to experience it, however, I’m still SO excited to be going back home! Plus we are hosting the Chinese students in a couple of weeks, as well, which is going to be really fun. I’m going to miss being in China, I think. One day I’ll definitely come back and visit again, there are still a few places I’d like to see. I’m going to miss some of the food, I am going to have a go at re-creating a few of my favourite dishes when I get home but will probably fail… One thing I won’t miss is the toilets!!! I can’t wait to be ... read more

So today we visited the Great Wall of China! We left the hostel at around 6:00 am went to meet the bus, but because some people were running late the driver thought we weren’t coming and left but eventually came back… It took us around three hours to get to the Wall from our hostel. Yashoda told us that we weren’t going to the section of the Great Wall where all the tourists go that has been reconstructed, but we were going to a section that is one hundred percent untouched which I thought was pretty cool. I was a little disappointed because I still would have liked to have seen the touristy part, but I'll probably come back and see that some other time in the future… The walk along the Wall was SO gorgeous! ... read more

Today we went to the Great Wall of China. We got up early and drove for about two hours then, we arrived. We did a bit of hiking and, when we reached the top, it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. The mountains where amazing and the Great Wall was out of this world. We were the only ones on the wall - a part of it that had not been restored - it was amazing. The weather was very hot and I got a bit sun-burnt but, it was worth it. I also could not believe how long the wall was and I wanted to walk the whole thing but that would be impossible because it is so long and a lot of it is broken. One thing I can’t get my ... read more

I haven’t seen this many Western people on the entire trip over here in China. When I got off the train from Xi’an, I was shocked to see so many Western people, I turned this way, Western person, I turned that way, Western person. I was really surprised that there were so many. It was pretty funny for a while. I was walking in the markets yesterday, when a Chinese guy came up to me asking where I was from, and calling me ‘Army Girl’ because of my cap. I told him Australia and he was like’ Australia? Awesome, you are cool, Australian Army Girl’. I walked off with Tamara laughing, but the entire time I was talking to this guy, an American guy who looked to be in his sixties was just looking between me ... read more

I woke up on the overnight train with someone almost stepping on me trying to climb from the top bunk. After realising we had to get off in less than ten minutes, I woke up Che'la and we got out of bed and grabbed our bags in a rushed frenzy. We took a few subways to finally arrive at our hostel, where we had to leave our bags, while we went on an excursion to the ‘Temple of Heaven’. Bethany and I hardly saw anything because we were so tried. We took turns in closing our eyes and having the other lead us around. But when my eyes were open, it didn't pass me that the Temple of Heaven was beautiful. After a long walk to the exit, we walked around Pearl Market for about an ... read more

R: By the time we crossed the border it was about 1am (Chinese time). I set an alarm on my phone as the train passed along the route of the great wall of China at around 7am just after stopping at Datong. Now, having got used to the slow pace of life on the train, and being fairly tired from the previous weeks activities - I didn't make the alarm. By the time I had woken up, got up and out, and escaped the compartment, the wall was in the distance and could only just be seen through the dirty train windows. (This was a Chinese train remember, and I don't think it gets cleaned in Moscow so it has been nearly 2 weeks since its last wash!). I did manage to see glimpses of it ... read more

R: First job - find a metro ticket. Rather, find the train ticket again. Unusually there was a ticket control at the main station doors that was besieged by people. This proved harder than expected as we couldn't remember where we had put them and we were now in a slow moving shuffling queue. Next, find a metro ticket. And also, money. Richard had come prepared with some Yuan, but I had not. For now I had to start spending his. We found our way onto the Metro and, by the way, it was much hotter in Beijing than anywhere else we had been yet. The metro was quite an experience - there was a lot of underground walking to get to the trains and we were saluted by the police at every entrance, where, in ... read more

Arrived in China later than expected, so had to hot foot it to our hotel to meet our tour group! We followed all the instructions given to us on how to get from the airport to the hotel via taxi, but somehow must have done something wrong. So much so we ended up in a 16 seater minibus- to ourselves!!! The giggles soon dissipated due to the crazy nature of the taxi drivers driving and other Chinese road users! Now we have had some crazy taxis before but I feel this may have taken the biscuit. But still we arrived checked in, met the group and had dinner. The next day it was up early for a guided tour of Tiananmen Square, the forbidden city and the dream tower! This day was entertaining for a few ... read more
