CHINA: Beijing...Tiantan...The Temple of Heaven.
700,000 workers & soldiers cleared up snow on 23 December 2002...300 pedestrians were treated in hospital for falling on ice...the highest snowfalls in Beijing in 138 years...and I walked around the Forbidden City that day...in a blizzard!!!
The following day I visited Tiantan...The Temple of Heaven...and three visits over the years I w... Read Full Entry
My wife Denise & I like to travel "on paths less travelled" that capture our imagination, inspire my photography & where we mix with locals & remain safe.

Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule, with the exception of the 1936-41 Italian occupation during World War II. In 1974 a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SELASSIE (wh...more info
Another great blog I always enjoy your blogs Dave..I suspect its the Aussie sense of "She'll be right" and in your case, if its not right, you always seem to make it right :-)
OH WOW CINDY Thank you for your kind words...Tiantan is one of those special places in this World...I hope my photos do it justice. Fortunate are we it was not desecrated during the Cultural Revolution.
I write this mourning the destruction of tombs and threats to destroy the mud mosques in Timbuktu...I grieve for the ancient places destroyed by radical elements in the name of religion...I am devastated.
Setting = place + time Could you please add the dates for you second and third trips to Beijing.
Now I know how you got interested in the book "1421."
And now that you have given me a brief glimpse of previous unblogged trips, you must write those blogs soon.
I know that you couldn't enter one date for three timeframes, but if you blog the rest in chronological order make sure your Entry Date is the date you took the trips...keeps the blogs in order. Sorry about making such suggestions, but I found out the hard way after using the current date for trips I took long ago the blogs didn't flow chronologically which, being a logical engineer, drove me crazy! I have been trying to get Ali to change the Entry Date to Trip Date for a long time.
FOR BOB...DANCING TO MY OWN TUNE I hope you enjoyed the blog...Tiantan...a magic place. If I tell a tale, to me it is not relevant when it was...the relevance is the enjoyment & freshness of the tale at the time of telling. I have had 4 major trips to China...just knocked back a 5th...14 Provences to date...some more than once...special places to share and pivotal & unique stories to tell. I thus prefer the Geographical & Theme approach when blogging China...not the Chronological. Thus Tiantan was from 3 visits in 2002/03, 2005/06 & 2006/07. Entry Date=Trip Date does not suit me. I prefer Entry Date=Blog Date...and to dance to my own tune...like a Pied Piper leading to...?...watch this space! And the music...listen to Teng Ge in the TB World Music Forum...and be transported!
Another side of your photography With all of those wonderful portraits of yours that we are used to seeing, it is pleasing to observe that you share such talents on architectural subjects as well.
THANKS SHANE Tiantan is often described as the pinnacle of Ming Architecture...for its arcs and lines...and in snow...truly a Temple of Heaven. Watch this space...and even though I've seen a lot in China...I've only touched the surface of this extraordinary country.
