The day after our failed visit to the Forbidden City we decided it should be safe enough to visit one of the cities parks, so we decided on Jingshan Park which was the park behind the Forbidden city where the taxi driver dropped us the day before. The parks in Beijing are quite beautiful and often bustling with people on the weekend meeting to dance in traditional costumes, sing traditional songs, play cards, kick the feathered ball thing around or just play tourist. We trudged up the big hill in the middle of the park which was formed by the digging of the moat around the forbidden city to the temple on top. Once there (after catching our breaths) we took in the spectacular views of the Forbidden city, and the views over Beijing. In the ... read more

Having read about the Beijing Natural History Mueseum in the guidebook with it's wonderful dinosaur exhibition the boys and I decided to go on an outing to find it. I consulted the map and decided we could take the subway and walk to 1.5km to the mueseum. So off we went - big mistake - first of all the map was lousy we wandered around in circles at the top end of Tienamen square trying to find the right street to walk down and then when we were pretty sure we had the right one off we went. We walked and walked and walked fending off guys with their rickshaws trying to get us to take a ride to the forbidden city. After walking for 15mins or so we were feeling rather lost so after visiting ... read more

Our first day in Beijing. We had not anticipated how cold the city would be; as low as 30F! Walking around the Forbidden City and the Lama Temple helped warm us up a little. We missed the Temple of Heaven due to some misrepresentation on a guide book map, but still a full first day!... read more

On Tuesday, we went out towards Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City. We had thought that they were across the road from each other, rather than the Forbidden City being located behind Tian'anmen Square. What we thought was Tian'anmen Square was actually the People's Monument and the National Flag. Tian'anmen Square was a large open space. At the front of it was several flags, and a gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. I don't think I've ever seen a larger portrait of someone in my life. I don't think I'd want a portrait of myself shown like that! Behind the square was the Palace Museum. The Palace Museum is actually the formal name for the Forbidden City now. It reminded me of how the Skydome is now technically Rogers Centre. Did you know that there were originally ... read more

Today Roger took us to the Forbidden City in Beijing, which served as the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. For almost 500 years, it served as the home of emperors and their households, as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. Built in only 14 years (1406-1420), the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 7,800,000 sq ft, making it the world's largest palace complex. There are over 9000 rooms throughout the complex, so if the emperor lived in 1 room each day it would take him almost 25 years to live in each room! Luckily for me, we had a tour guide who spoke English and took Liang, Roger and I on a 2 1/2 hour tour of the City. We first toured ... read more

Our first full day in China, we decided to head to the Forbidden City. Our hotel was right on Donganmen street about 3 blocks from the Forbidden City. We did this by ourselves, without a tour. Beijing in the winter time is very cold and windy. Luckily I read up on the weather before we got there. A good winter jacket, lined boots, hats, scarf, gloves, and thermal underwear are a must if you go to Beijing in the winter time. From Dongamen you can either enter from the main entrance (south) or the rear entrance (north). We decided to take a left and go to the main entrance. Even though it was a bitterly cold day, the sun was shining. The walk to the main entrance is very serene and peaceful. On side the main ... read more

We set out to the market that Yannie told us about to buy a few more warm items. It was so nice to not be yelled at and to be given the correct price right away. We both walked away with a hoodie and sweatpants, and I also got a vest. After the market we decided to drop off our bags back at the house then purchase train tickets, and head to the Forbidden City. Rich accompanied us to buy the tickets. They are actually pretty expensive, but we don’t really have a choice. So we go Tuesday to Xian. We caught a taxi to the Forbidden City and walked in the park to a viewpoint where you can see the whole Forbidden City down below. You can really take in how big the place is. ... read more

Approximately a mile from our hotel room, we could see the roofs of the buildings within The Forbidden City. On the day we visited the city, we decided to hire our own tour guide for 200 Yuan ($31.50) for the six of us. After a four hour tour with our English speaking guide named "Linda", we knew it was worth it! (I have her contact information should anyone plan to visit Beijing and need a guide for any of the major attractions.) Grace and Faith enjoyed learning about the city and enjoyed having 72 hectors of space to stretch their legs. Since we visited on a weekday during the off-season, the site was not crowded. After we completed the tour, we decided to walk back to the hotel. We walked for quite a while until we ... read more

Day 1 Beijing When we got out of the plane, I looked up and the sun was red! Not only that, but the smog was so bad you could hardly see anything. When we got to the baggage carousel my bag had been badly damaged and it had all these holes on them like it had been crushed by the luggage car. We were picked up by a taxi driver who was holding an Intrepid tour sign. He drove a better car than I had been in my life. (but don't expect normal Beijing taxis to be like this). We drove for what probably was an eternity through Beijing's winding ringroads and highways and got caught in a traffic jam. The pollution burns your face when you're not used to it. When we finally got to ... read more
