We caught a taxi to the 798 art district from the Sanyuan Bridge train station, it took about 15 minutes. The 798 district is full of contemporary artwork. We would recommend more research before hand. We did not do much research and found that the map there was not particularly useful and we could not find any information centres. So, we ended up strolling around and tried to catch whatever we could in District D and E. We visited 3 galleries: UCCA - a contemporary art centre founded by Guy and Myriam Ullens Pace Beijing - An exhibition hall where we saw paintings of Yue Minjun's characteristic laughing figures Baiyaxuan 798 Art Centre - where there was an exhibition of Wu Guanzhong's water paintings. As we strolled along, we saw many interesting art scupltures and coffee ... read more
After our failed attempt to see Mao's pickled body laying in the centre of Tiananmen squarewe caved to the desire for some last minute shopping and went to the Lonely Planet recommended tourist shopping centre. After years in Asia this was one of the most intense shopping experiences....people where literally screaming and grabbing at anyone that walked past and offering starting prices so low it was almost sad the level of their desperation. The array of accents and foreign langauages spoken by the stall holders was incredible. We finished our very very long day of Dawn Tianaman, Forbidden City and shopping with one of the final tourist essentials for Beijing, a delicious dinner of Peking Duck. We left Beijing in true Chinese style, queing excitedly at Asia's largest train station with our packs on our backs ... read more
Finally arrived in Beijing, there is so much to do in so little time that I wont be writing too much right now. I will tell you though that yesterday's adventures culminated in a dinner of Bull Frog Hot-Pot! Today we visited the Summer Palace and did a lot of shopping :)... read more
I'm here...almost! In transit at Guangzhuo airport so I haven't actually been out in the China air yet although the air is hot enough in the airport is hot enough. It's 6am and i already have sweat running down my back! Oh and they just turned all of the lights off, hopefully its to save power for the aircon! So my flight...let's just say i will never complain about Qantas again! My flight from Brisbane to Sydney was luxurious compared to the international leg on China Southern or as it should be known China Midget airways. The seats were tiny, my head reached the top and my knees hit the seat in front. Even the tiny Chinese lady next to me had trouble getting her tray table to sit flat because her knees were in the ... read more

Hong Kong - Lots of cars and shiny things
Published: July 14th 2011Asia » China » Beijing » DongchengHello folks. Well, surprisingly I absolutely loved Hong Kong. When I arrived I was in a foul mood, a ridiculously over crowded over night bus from Yangzhou to Shenzhen helped to ensure this. But it was more than this, as you probably gathered from the last post I was pretty disappointed and frustrated by China. It was more about my expectations then a reflection of the Country, I knew that the Cities were going to be hectic nightmares so specifically headed to Yangzhou to escape the madness but was very disappointed to discover that Yangshou was also a hectic nightmare. On arrival in Hong Kong I was half expecting to be met at the Border by a well dressed English Gent who would give me a firm handshake and welcome me home, but then I remembered ... read more
Time= Unkown Location=Times Holiday Hotel Well I would be lieing if I said the trip has not been tiring but its been much more staight forward than expected! We met at 2.30, at terminal 2. Our back packs full- well Emmas full- our families all gathered in black to mourn or going. Check in was straight forward and after hugs, tears, and more warnings to not get raped (cheers for the advice nan), we set up the escalator to begin our adventure. Maybe a sign of things to come when we are stopped at baggage control, Emma is frisked- which she doesnt complain about- and my bag is thoroughly swabbed- i swear i dont know how the cocaine got in there! But all was forgotten when we were kicking our feet up, whacking a chill in ... read more
Well I was hoping to write a great entry here with only a few minor mishaps. Unfortunatly The airport adventures I went on were not all that fantastic but after 24.5 hours of making my way to our destination we finally got to lay in our bed. Whoever said u dont get jetlag with only 2 hours time difference is wrong. Im wrecked. So rewind to yesterday the 29th and waking at 5am in the morning to race to the airport only to forget 1 of Elijah's cuddle rugs. The important one that wont strangle him when he is having a restless sleep and tossing and turning. My wonderful big brother went back to his house to grab that and bring my bank cards that I left in the car (I was stressing hard) while my ... read more
Hello all! I am sorry it has been such a long time and that I have been so rubbish and not blogged in 5 WEEKS, but I was unable to blog the whole time I was in China and Tibet (being technically part of China too)....meaning I have loads to write about (so pity me as I have about 60 pages of my diary to write about in what will end up being around 5 separate blogs)...... I am now in Kathmandu in Nepal, hence being able to access my blog. Well, what can I say about China?? It was an EXPERIENCE!! I really enjoyed my time there but it is like nowhere else I have ever been. I will write about what I got up to, and then you can make your own mind up ... read more
Beijing, oh sweet and sour Beijing... What have we done to deserve such treats from your wonderful city? Landing on the tarmac, we came through customs to a world totally unknown to us... no signs in english, no english speaking people... just a whole lot of weird and wonderful smells and scenery!! Swapping some Aussie dollars for the local currency Yuan, we got 6 times our money!! SWEET!! Navigating the very clean and easy Beijing Subway system, we found ourselves in a dog eat dog world where to get to the front, you need to push and shove, and hockin up phlegm as loud as you can and then hackin it up on the street is not only normal, but cool as too!! What a place!! The first day consisted of cruising into the Hutongs around ... read more
