I am no longer a teacher. The phrase has been echoing in my head throughout the day. I wasn't a teacher before I came to China, but after spending a year with that profession as my identity, I feel a sense of loss. Every day for the past year, I have been known as "Teacher Merritt". When asked by inquisitive shopkeepers what my purpose is in Beijing, I proudly told them "I'm a teacher". I felt as though I had something to contribute to the world, the ability to teach something to those who desperately wanted to learn it. My last working day was 2 days ago, Thursday, September 27. Initially, I felt as though it was the start of my weekend; indeed, Friday and Saturday were the days off I enjoyed each week. Today, however, ... read more

As i sit at the desk in my room in my apartment in China, I gaze out the window at the scene 18 stories below me. The children at the bilingual school near my apartment complex are circled around the flagpole as the Chinese national anthem blares from the loudspeakers and the national flag is jerkily raised to the top of the pole by bright-eyed youngsters. The never-ceasing sounds of construction crash through the still-cool morning air as silver-haired women begin their morning exercises and grandchildren watch from strollers parked nearby. Recently, a Chinese flute player has been added to the morning ambiance; the lilting music echoes through the complex and serves as a soothing alarm clock. This place has become my home. I know the family who runs the store where I buy my bottled ... read more

The past week has been wrought with technological problems. After a whirlwind month, I sat down at my computer to crank out another humorous, yet clever, yet meaningful blog when I discovered that the TravelBlog website was down. Uncertain as to the cause, and knowing that anything is possible in China, I sent an email home to inquire if the blog could be viewed from the States. As it couldn't, I knew the blog wasn't blocked (my initial concern). Fast forward to several days later, and I'm informed by the administrator of the site that the database had crashed, due to (insert a long, technical explanation that I didn't understand here). The worst part about it was that the past 3 months of blogs, for everyone who writes on the site, had been lost and were ... read more

Hello again! For those who are wondering why I have not written for a long long time, be at peace: life goes too fast out here, the end of the school year is always very busy for mums! The building in the construction site right in front of our windows will be finished in a flash…14 floors above the ground, 5 under, and I will still be trying to finish this page!!! Anyway, we went to Hong Kong (HK) for a short break for May 1rst holiday. We liked it a lot. We chose to stay, not in the crowed town of HK, but in what they call 'the Green HK': with no less than 200 islands, HK has a lot of nature spots, lots of hiking tracks and beaches. We stayed on Lantau island, ... read more

It was better than Christmas. After months of separation, after countless chats via skype, after what felt like hundreds of emails, the day had arrived. I had waited for 8 months with breath that was bated for this day. June 21, 2007 was the day my family arrived in Beijing for a week-long visit. It was a week filled with excitement, drama, angst, confusion, humor, awe, and random sound effects. In short, the typical family reunion. D-DAY THURSDAY. JUNE 21, 2007 I had tossed and turned for hours the night before. It felt like Christmas, Easter and my birthday all rolled into one. All day long, I was jittery with excitement. My afternoon coffee suddenly seemed like a really bad idea. I attempted to study Chinese, to prepare for my classes, to talk to students, ... read more

It's hard to believe that 8 months have passed since I left the United States and moved to China. A year abroad seemed so daunting as I counted down the days to my departure last summer. Each day seemed precious. I drove all over the city with my dog, McKinley, in tow (he sure does love car rides). I went to the Rhythm and Booms, the huge fireworks and music extravaganza with my Dad (it was delayed only one day this year, due to tornado warnings). I held a job for a single day before I decided I'd rather spend my last summer at home, well, at home. We had the family over for grill-outs on the side deck overlooking the waterfalls and ponds. There was only one minor dramatic incident whilst building the second pond ... read more

Taking a stroll around the Fulicheng apartment complex has become an after-dinner ritual of mine. I've become a bit of a restless spirit and the walk, in combination with music provided by my ever-present iPod, is just the fix I need to calm myself down. That, and I've heard rumors that a white standard poodle lives in a nearby building, and I've made it my mission to go on a poodle stakeout each night until I spot him. (As many of you know, I have my own white standard poodle at home in Wisconsin, who is very dear to me). I have not been successful in my search thus far, but I refuse to give up. At any rate, the walk is very pleasant and helps me feel like more of a member of the community. ... read more

It's taken me 23 years, but I've finally figured it out. I am a writer. I write when I'm happy, I write when I'm sad, I write when I'm angry, I write to share my life with others, I write in an attempt to make others' lives better and I write just because I feel like it. I am able to express myself better through the written word than by any other means of communication, aside from playing the piano. My parents are likely smacking their foreheads in exasperation that it's taken me this long to realize the fact, as they've known for eons. Even you, my dear readers, are probably sitting with jaws agape in astonishment that I could be so dense. Aside from that stunning realization, I've had a very thought-provoking and fruitful week. ... read more

Leaving for Hong Kong so soon after my grandmother's passing was both a blessing and a curse. May 1st, International Labor Day, is a national holiday in China and so we were granted 3 days of official vacation by the government. I had been eagerly anticipating the trip since mid-March, but found myself feeling as though I was disrespectful by going on vacation so soon after we lost my grandma. I was still in a state of shock and denial when I boarded the flight to Hong Kong, but I hoped that the 5 days exploring the city would distract me. We left on Tuesday, May 1st. After an hour-long delay at the airport, the plane lifted off into the sky and I began my traditional 90-second countdown. When I was young, flying excited me and ... read more

The day I left for China, October 21, was my grandma Ruth's birthday. When I told her that my flight to China for my new job was on her special day, her response was her classic catchphrase-- "Well, that's a fine how-do-you-do!". Yesterday, I had traveled about an hour outside of Beijing to see the famous botanical garden filled with beautiful flowers and flowing streams when my dad told me the news. I feel fortunate to have been outside of the city in a beautiful garden when I found out that my grandma had died. She loved nature and flowers. She went for many wonderful car rides with my aunt and uncle to look at the leaves on the trees as they turned from the summer green to the vibrant red, yellow and orange of fall. ... read more
