Most Cambodians consider themselves to be Khmers, whose Angkor Empire extended over much of Southeast Asia and reached its zenith between the 10th and 13th centuries. Subsequently, attacks by the Thai and Cham (from present-day Vietnam) weakened the empire ushering in a long period of decline. In 1863, the king of Cambodia placed the country under French protection; it became part of French Indochina in 1887. Following Japanese occupation in World War II, Cambodia became independent within the French Union in 1949 and fully independent in 1953. After a five-year struggle, Communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh in April 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns; at least 1.5 million Cambodians died from execution, enforced hardships, or starvation during the Khmer Rouge regime under POL POT. A December 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside, led to a 10-year Vietnamese occupation, and touched off almost 13 years of civil war. The 1991 Paris Peace Accords mandated democratic elections and a ceasefire, which was not fully respected by the Khmer Rouge. UN-sponsored elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of normalcy and the final elements of the Khmer Rouge surrendered in early 1999. Factional fighting in 1997 ended the first coalition government, but a second round of national elections in 1998 led to the formation of another coalition government and renewed political stability. The July 2003 elections were relatively peaceful, but it took one year of negotiations between contending political parties before a coalition government was formed. Nation-wide local elections are scheduled for 2007 and national elections for 2008. To be updated

Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville - Part 1 - Day 1 - 06:20 AM I awoke this morning in Phnom Penh to a gloriously beautiful day with the air cool and a crisp breeze blowing, which seemed like a great way to start another journey out of the capital and make my way to the coastal towns of Cambodia. After grabbing my 2 small bags and making my way downstairs to the street, I hailed a motorcycle taxi and headed out for the Central Market and the G.S.T. bus station located near there. Paying a generous 2,000 Riel (.50) to the driver, [View Full Entry]

The horn honking made our seven hour bus ride to the capitol of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, quite pleasant. Especially with our pit stop where there were vendors selling everything from pineapple, dried meat, and fried spiders. tasty. We have also been learning more about the Khmer Rouge and the atroticities that killed approximately 2 million people, leaving 40% of the population, today, younger than 14 years old. It makes me wonder how I was born in a country where my parents didn't have to worry about a political tyrant, where my childhood was spent selling trinkets and crafts to foreigners. Butterfly garden

We hope that you are all doing super!! We pick up from our stay in Siem Reap. In the spirit of our "romantic" private island getaway: We had heard about floating villages on the Tonle Sap Lake and thought--how AWESOME! We could rent a boat/driver to take us around and see them! cool little boat...cute chairs, nice driver...and a number of house like canoes that we had never seen before. However, instead of the sunset that we heard was really beautiful to see on the lake, we had the exceptional view of the one ominous cloud that covered the sky...as well [View Full Entry]

Angkor bound
thirsty anyone?
No idea what animal this is...

hello everyone!! Yesterday was quite a long day. We left Bangkok at 7am arrived at the Cambodian border at about 3pm. The bus drivers warned us to keep everything out of our pockets. we didn't understand why at the time but once the hordes of children started reaching into our pockets at the border town...well, then we understood. The tour bus was split up to smaller buses and we ended up at a guest house at about 10pm. The road from the border to siem reap is 157 km and it took about 6 hours. As patsy would say, WOW!!!
