Most Cambodians consider themselves to be Khmers, whose Angkor Empire extended over much of Southeast Asia and reached its zenith between the 10th and 13th centuries. Subsequently, attacks by the Thai and Cham (from present-day Vietnam) weakened the empire ushering in a long period of decline. In 1863, the king of Cambodia placed the country under French protection; it became part of French Indochina in 1887. Following Japanese occupation in World War II, Cambodia became independent within the French Union in 1949 and fully independent in 1953. After a five-year struggle, Communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh in April 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns; at least 1.5 million Cambodians died from execution, enforced hardships, or starvation during the Khmer Rouge regime under POL POT. A December 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside, led to a 10-year Vietnamese occupation, and touched off almost 13 years of civil war. The 1991 Paris Peace Accords mandated democratic elections and a ceasefire, which was not fully respected by the Khmer Rouge. UN-sponsored elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of normalcy and the final elements of the Khmer Rouge surrendered in early 1999. Factional fighting in 1997 ended the first coalition government, but a second round of national elections in 1998 led to the formation of another coalition government and renewed political stability. The July 2003 elections were relatively peaceful, but it took one year of negotiations between contending political parties before a coalition government was formed. Nation-wide local elections are scheduled for 2007 and national elections for 2008. To be updated

Hello Cambodia
Hello Cambodia
The border crossing between Thailand & Cambodia
"There is a magical aura about Cambodia that casts a spell on many who visit this charming yet confounding kingdom. Here you can ascend to the kingdom of the gods at Angkor Wat, a spectacular fusion of symbolism, symmetry and spirituality, or you can descend into the hell of the Tuol Sleng, and come face to face with the Khmer Rouge and their killing machine. Welcome to the conundrum that is Cambodia, an intoxicating place with a glorious past, a tragic present and an unwritten future." Lonely Planet on Cambodia. Seeing Hands

 Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville

Well, we've been here for two days now. Yesterday was exhausting after our long flight. We were greeted at the airport by our guide, "San" and our driver. After checking into our hotel --the Bougainvilliers--which is on the river, we then took individual cycle-taxis to a man-made hill where there's a pagoda. (I'm sorry, but I forgot to bring my notes with names to this cybercafe where I'm writing this from.) Then we did a river boat cruise, followed by dinner at the hotel. We began our day today with a visit to an association that teaches poor children how to [View Full Entry]

The day after we'd seen the temples we decided to go to a dance performance that is put on in an orphange every night by the children. Its called ACODO - its run by local Cambodian people who work for no wages to look after these kids. The dancing was excellent and the kids were amazing. So lovely, friendly and well behaved. We decided to skip Sihnouk Ville in the south of Cambodia and stay on and volunteer at the orphanage for a week. The highlight of the week was on saturday when 2 of the volunteers that had been there [View Full Entry]

They just loved getting their photos taken.

We have just returned from a wonderful time in Cambodia accompanied by cousin Ross and his wife Alice. What an amazing place. When you think it was only in 1975 the city of Phnom Penh was completely evacuated and remained empty until the Khmer Rouge defeat in 1979. We spoke with a waiter in Siem Reap who had fled his village in 1990 because of the Khmer Rouge soldiers. The people are wonderful always smiling and so happy and yet it is still a third world country. The children are beautiful and many of them at the temples in Ankor are [View Full Entry]

The Temples of Angkor

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap
They say a picture paints a thousand words and I took a thousand pictures but here's a few... The temples of Angkor - well they were very impressive. Angkor Wat is only one temple within a huge area covered with them. The Jungle temple was really cool. Where they shot tomb raider. We got a tuk tuk driver to take us around and while in Bayon we kind of got stuck with this 'Police man' - he was wearing a police uniform and he started talking to us and took our camera and gave us a 'tour' which we didn't ask [View Full Entry]

An example of how some of the temples have been lost to the surrounding trees.
Hi Everyone, Sorry it has been a while since our last update, we have had trouble finding a computer that will download our pictures without crashing! We spent four days in Siem Reap, Cambodia after leaving Thailand. Four days was just long enough to enjoy the city and visit all the temples of Ankor which were absolutely amazing. We started with the smaller temples first and on our final day we got up really early to watch the sunrise over Ankor Wat which, although a little cloudy, was amazing. We were quite shocked at how poor the people there are and [View Full Entry]

 Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville

Limo Bus 2

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh
So, aplogies for the last blog being so short. Rach discovered that the Cambodian sat next to her was looking at, well Ping Pong so to speak and shuffling suspiciously. So we up and left with some haste. On the internet again as we have just booked our accommodation in Saigon, which we are heading to tomorrow. Then we have a tour booked out on the Mekong Delta which should be good. So, the Limo Bus. This was our booked transport from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, I had visions of a luxurious bar, cocktails all round, and perhaps evern a [View Full Entry]

[WARNING: SOME OF THE PICTURES ARE VERY DISTURBING. SKIP TO THE 6TH PARAGRAPH FROM THE END IF YOU ONLY WANT TO READ ABOUT HOW A TUK TUK DRIVER TOLD A FRIEND AND I HE'D KILL US] As I walked through the Killing Fields in Phenom Phen, Cambodia, I found torn pieces of clothing, a bullet, tooth and button before I stopped searching the ground for more remains that had surfaced over time from the mass graves that surrounded me. Grass had grown over these graves, but they still caved in holding pools of rain water from days before. Some had been [View Full Entry]
