Most Cambodians consider themselves to be Khmers, whose Angkor Empire extended over much of Southeast Asia and reached its zenith between the 10th and 13th centuries. Subsequently, attacks by the Thai and Cham (from present-day Vietnam) weakened the empire ushering in a long period of decline. In 1863, the king of Cambodia placed the country under French protection; it became part of French Indochina in 1887. Following Japanese occupation in World War II, Cambodia became independent within the French Union in 1949 and fully independent in 1953. After a five-year struggle, Communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh in April 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns; at least 1.5 million Cambodians died from execution, enforced hardships, or starvation during the Khmer Rouge regime under POL POT. A December 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside, led to a 10-year Vietnamese occupation, and touched off almost 13 years of civil war. The 1991 Paris Peace Accords mandated democratic elections and a ceasefire, which was not fully respected by the Khmer Rouge. UN-sponsored elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of normalcy and the final elements of the Khmer Rouge surrendered in early 1999. Factional fighting in 1997 ended the first coalition government, but a second round of national elections in 1998 led to the formation of another coalition government and renewed political stability. The July 2003 elections were relatively peaceful, but it took one year of negotiations between contending political parties before a coalition government was formed. Nation-wide local elections are scheduled for 2007 and national elections for 2008. To be updated

Siem Reap is certainly a different place than Bangkok! Just finished dinner in the market , I seem to be living on pad thai and fried noodles...not bad for $1 US... I am having trouble posting pictures and when I attempted earlier today, the electricity went out in the town....not too many pics from Bangkok to share anyway. Staying @ a wonderful and quiet little place called Ivy 2 (Thanks Craig!). So much more quiet than the Lek Guesthouse in BKK. Guess that is what happens when you stay next door to a pub with a very large patio and your [View Full Entry]

Szybka wyprawa do Kambodzy... Jedno z miejsc ktore koniecznie chcialem zobaczyc, doswiadczyc. Lecz dzien nastal szybka konkretna decyzja - jade! Mialem caly plan podrozy mniej wiecej obmyslony. Po analizie forum Lonely Planet w poszukiwaniu info o drodze ladowej Bangkok - Siem Reap mialem generalny zarys calej drogi, teraz bylo go trzeba wdrozyc w zycie. Mialem je [View Full Entry]

Angkor WAT

A day of rest in Siem Reap in fantastic Cambodia. The morning went like this. • Keagan slept until 12 • Kerri read • Declan swam and watched TV • I blogged Lunch was spent at the Butterfly Garden Café. Encased by a large net the café is in a beautiful garden setting with butterflies in abundance. The owner pays local children to catch butterflies which is nice. Shopping followed at the central market - dresses, scarves and t-shirts. Swimming followed then the boys and I heated things up by going for a bike ride. Traffic is easy to navigate and [View Full Entry]

I can't believe it's been almost a month since my last post. Time is flying by. I've pretty much settled into a normal routine here, so there hasn't been anything significant to write about. I've been working in the BABSEA office most days so not many photos or highlights to share. I need to change that - less office work and more community work - before my time here runs out!! Yesterday I went to a gathering, not quite a protest, at one of the local slums called Dey Krahorm. DK is a slum that BABSEA has been working with since [View Full Entry]

Angkor Temples - Siem Reap

 Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor

 Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville....

 Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville
The bus ride was same same, kareoke songs playing on a tv with a bad connection full blast. One thing I will say, Linda was laughing so hard at this one song, it brought tears to her eyes. What a stupid song! As I am wrighting, it will not have the same effect, but if you can use your imagination, it goes something like this, not the words but the idea behind the song! It is clearly a sad love song because every new verse was started with the singer pretending to cry, but no ordinary cry, the cry you do [View Full Entry]

Cambodge

 Asia » Cambodia » North » Poipet

We have been in Phnom Penh for 2 days doing the tourist sights. Phnom Penh is a hell hole. Being the capital of Cambodia, it is packed wil people living there trying to make a dollar or two. It is en exact copy of Point Road in Durban, South Africa. Full of guns, drugs and prostitution. With the rich being super rich and the poor just dying. We stayed at The Royal Highness Hotel, don't be fooled, there was nothing Royal about it! The room was average, for Cambodia, aircon, TV with a clear reception, a first! The sheets had cigarette [View Full Entry]

Siem Reap - First Days

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap
HCM to Siem Reap. Pickup time from the hotel was 8.30. We wake here at 6.00 each day so no trouble packing before leaving. The plan departed on time which maybe is the norm as there is not a lot of aircraft traffic here. In 40 minutes (barely enough time to complete official travel documentation) we landed in Cambodia. Quickly though immigration it’s only 7km from the new small airport to the city centre. We are staying at the Day Inn Angkor resort (everything has Angkor in its name - the love the temples). It’s a major culture shock for us [View Full Entry]
