After a lazy couple of days on the beach we were ready for some entertainment so as it was Saturday night we hopped into a tuktuk with Dan, one of our fellow residents, and paid 3$ to go to Otres Village. We hadn’t been there before but had driven past the road in. There are quite a lot of cafes and restaurants, look the same sort of standard as here, a bit rough and ready but busy with people, all ages. We turned off to the right down a dark track, apparently this was the right way but it looked unlikely. We were expecting a typical Asian street market, stalls of tat and food lining the street. Oh no, not this one! You go through an entrance off a really dark street, it’s signed Otres Market, ... read more

The weather in the early morning was truly horrendous. Torrential rain on our tin roof, absolutely deafening. Sam had left a window open to get a breeze and the rain came in and things got wet. To be fair, rain also came in through the gaps in the walls. The roof leaked a bit too. My bed stayed dry but all our clothes generally lying around ended up damp. We got up super early and couldn’t pack fast enough! It had stopped raining but the sea right in front of us had a swell, so we were worried about conditions further out, on the way back to Sihanoukville, and whether the big boat will run or maybe be delayed. Lots more rubbish bobbing about, as well as large pieces of wood. We had breakfast as soon ... read more

After breakfast today I went over to the next jetty to book our speedboat return for tomorrow. The actual office window was all shut up but the guy behind the bar wrote 4 and 5 on my ticket stubs and said be there 9.20, boat go 9.45. I asked where the boat actually stopped on the way back to Sihanoukville and he said he didn’t know. It’s possible we’ll be taken out of our way again and have to change boats. Best option is to be taken to the main village and change there. Because of the moon, there was a really high tide and lots of waves, constant crashing, so neither of us slept very well. We went to the beach again and there was a lot of rubbish in the water and on the ... read more

Today we mostly stood up to our necks in the sea, or at least we did this morning. This afternoon it was a bit rough for that, but a beautiful sunny day despite the weather reports saying rain. We slept OK, although for me the sea was quite loud and penetrated my earplugs. Not particularly lulling. And all our stuff felt damp in the hut, but at least we had no bites. The electricity came on last night and we could charge our stuff, nothing overheated. The hut is very gappy but hopefully we get a bit more breeze through because of it. It doesn’t look like they use tape measures much when building, it’s all very rustic and charming. The so-called sand flies are around and look like mozzies with long tails. We are spraying ... read more

We DO have WiFi on Koh Rong, albeit not very feisty! Our journey here was not quite as advertised. The pickup (yellow) bus for the Cambodian Island Speed Ferry company arrived as advertised, around 8.20am, stopping off to pick people up along the way into town and going on to Sokha Beach before dropping us off just before the pier. We again were glad we hadn’t stayed in Sihanoukville, so many casinos, nowhere that looked very inviting. We flashed our tickets at the desk at the start of the pier and were waved along without boarding cards. There were 3 boats from the same company. We needed the smaller one at the number 5 stop. It is worth asking, those thinking of doing this trip, exactly what the stops are. We wanted Sok San Village, and ... read more

The day before yesterday we ate at Mom’s kitchen on the beach, where we hang out in the day. This was a mistake. The eating part. Say no more..... And the advertised fire show didn‘t materialise. What did materialise was a singing duo, not in the first flush of youth, from Melbourne. When the guy sang on his own Sam said he sounded like a Vic Reeves lounge singer impersonator. It was just vowel sounds. What smelt and looked good was the barbecue station. You choose fish, chicken, other things and they make you a plateful up of various salad items for about 5$. It looked like a good deal. I had the amok vegetable and rice combo. A good deal, but in other respects a BAD idea. Luckily yesterday we weren’t planning to go far. ... read more

Thursday is Leo's Lake Fishing Day.Having checked out the lake on the previous day, we knew we were not in for a huge catch but Leo was hopeful of a few fish. Not to be, the Guilie and Leo tried every conceivable fishing method to no avail. It was a peaceful interlude with plenty of sunshine and not too much humidity, but even when floating baits for surface rolling fish they merely nudged the bait. Other Ex Pat fishermen said the late rains had made the fish confused and off their feeding, saying that the lake and nearby river were akin to Hot Chocolate, Oh well, not even a fishy story to tell, of the one that got away. Ravenous late afternoon, as the venue had no food we go to a local Khmer restaurant for ... read more

Last night we dined in, or rather ate on our balcony. It was barbecue night and we were most attracted by the food, in particular the mashed potato. It didn’t disappoint, nor did the buffalo steak. Absolutely delicious and only 5.50$. We are so happy we’ll be back here next Thursday for more of the same. There was a DJ playing chill out tunes but we couldn’t hear from inside our bungalow. Then I had my daily struggle with the mosquito net, tearing a 6 inch hole in it while I tried to tuck it in and have enough left to actually close it. I am rubbish. I had to start again, while Sam scoffed from inside her perfect one. It’s quite a ritual, organising all your overnight items inside, technology, earphones, water, remote for the ... read more

Yesterday we went to the beach. We tried Mushroom Point first on recommendation but the sunbeds were round planks of wood for two. No good, we went next door and afternsetting ourselves guy came out waving a menu and said if we didn’t want food there and then (10.30am) we had to pay 2$ for each bed. No. We packed up in high dudgeon. The next place along was Mom’s Kitchen. Super comfy beds, nice relaxed atmosphere, cheap drinks, we spent the day there. Usual vendors of food etc. There was also an Indian guy in a turban, very smartly dressed in a pressed shirt, carrying a man bag and chatting with people. We’d seen him the day before. We asked the hotel what he was up to and apparently he chats, says he’ll tell your ... read more

Day 14. Sihanoukville. Rest day. Good breakfast with eastern and western choices before sauntering down the beach paddling in the sea. Walking on the waterbreak was good apart from the plastic and other rubbish dumped above the waterline and the sewage being drained into the sea making it unsuitable for swimming, although Alison did a quick splash. A drink part way back up the beach was followed by lunch at the Vegan cafe. I had bacon, egg and chips, swallowed down with a glass of beer. Sihanoukville is staffed by youths of all nationalities, Ukraine, French and Turks etc. The next job was to open my bike box and squeeze a few items into the tiny gaps to reduce my hand luggage weight and size.
