Our Cambodian Curry
Made by our own hands - do you like the banana leaf bowls - also made by hand, please note Well up early again this morning - this does not bode well I am sure I am supposed to be chilling out. Anyway got the tuk tuk into town as our hotel is outside of the town which is a bit of a bore in some ways but I suppose we are away from the noise.
I decided that Mike should do the negotiating for the tuk tuk as he needs to get used to this haggling thing that you have to do whilst in Asia. He negotiated a good price - could I have done better (oops the competitive streak has come out again in me).
So off we go via tuk tuk to the place where we were going for the cooking class it was in a restuarant called "Frizz".
After getting lost as our driver said he knew where he was going but actually just wanted to get a couple of people in his tuk tuk. After going round in circles we pointed him to where we needed to be.
Anyway at the class there were a couple from Milan a couple from Vienna, a lady from USA (who was volunteering in Cambodia) and
a gentleman from Germany who is currently working in Mongolia. So what is he doing there - well it seems he is working for the German University system seeking out brainy students and trying to persuade them to study in Germany. What will the Germans think of next?!
We made spring rolls and a sweet chilli sauce to start with and then made a fish curry using banana leaves as the dish. I must say that they all turned out great and tasted brilliant as well. We had a great morning as we had to go the the market to buy the ingrediants we needed to make everything - so was an experience in itself.
We then found a second hand bookshop so I could buy a book on Vietnam as the Southeast Asia book I bought in England is not country specific enough although it did give me the idea about booking the cooking course so I suppose was not completely useless.
The book was 7$ which is a lot less than in England and it is a lonely planet book.
After a bit of an argument on the way home as I wanted to
get a tuk tuk for 2$ to a place for a drink and Mike wanted to walk we ended up and had a beer (after walking please note in the heat of the day!).
We are now back at the hotel as Mike agreed to get a tuk tuk back to the hotel. The hotel lobby has wifi but our room does not which can be a real pain. We have just checked our flights for tomorrow with Vietnam Airlines and have noticed when we tried to check in that they have our first names as David Fairbairn and mine as Jane Fairbairn and our family name as Michael and Paula. This flight has been a real nightmare from begining to end as we have had problems with it all along - lets hope it is ok tomorrow and they let us board the plane - maybe still in Cambodia if all goes wrong tomorrow when we try to board the flight.
Anyway decided to go into town tonight for a meal and hailed a tuk tuk down outside the hotel and whilst trying to explain where we wanted to go a lady who works at the hotel came over to help and then decided it was easier to give us a lift than try to explain to the tuk tuk. This was brilliant until when I said sorry to thu tuk tuk man for stopping him and not using him - she thought it was highly amusing that anyone would say sorry to a tuk tuk man - I did not like this as to me everyone is an equal and should be treated with respect.
The meal was good and after Mike haggled with the tuk tuk man to take us home - with a little bit of help from me we are now holed up in the hotel lobby with a G&T.
Hope you are all well.
Hope everyone is ok
