The love for Durian is strong in Kampot My time in Kampot was not that memorable. It was a charming little city, but I was unable to do much exploration because of an ailment. Kampot is known for is black pepper, which I don't remember trying. Anyways, like I was saying I was sick and could barely get out of bed. I feared the worst, that it was Dengue fever, so I went and got tested at a local health center. The health center itself was more like a school then a health center. Afterwards, I pulled myself out of bed and walked, for what seemed like an eternity for some Tylenol. The Tylenol help and after a few days I felt like myself again. I was here during Thanksgiving, so I had my own Thanksgiving ... read more

When we were arranging our transport to Kampot, the idea of being picked up as the first ones seemed like a good one at the time, we would have a chance to pick our seats at least… It certainly wasn’t an advantage in this case though… Our supposed 2-hour journey to Kampot turned out to be twice as long because of that... we still needed to pick up the rest of the backpackers and some of them didn’t even bother to turn up on time… To be honest it probably wouldn’t have bothered me normally, but the seats were tiny and very uncomfortable with no leg space whatsoever… I thought I would just keep myself occupied with some blogging then… Well… That’s where I really started getting grumpy… My netbook was playing tricks on me again! ... read more

Our stay in Kampot didn't get off to the best of starts. After the long, hot, dusty tuk tuk ride from Kep, our driver couldn't find our hotel and refused to listen to us when we said it was just up the road behind us. We went around the block three times before he called into another hotel to be told it was...yes...just up the road behind us! The hotel reception staff were probably the rudest we have met on our travels, and that's not just because they didn't speak English. It seemed we were interrupting their day and it also seemed we were the only guests. Then we were put into a room on the roof that looked a bit dated and suffered from the wind whistling past at all angles. Feeling pretty disgruntled we ... read more

Leaving Phnom Penh for Kampot. It was a very chilled afternoon after arriving there. Our awesome wooden, tall legged bungalow was firstly a bit of a change from the norm. The guesthouse was next to the river which was also nice. We got chatting to a nice family, Sue, Steve and Heidi. Then later joined by two crazy dudes from East Sussex. We had some grub and had an early night (Oh, the red curry and their fresh spring rolls were delicious!) Short and sweet day.... read more

I have recently returned from spending a few restful days in Kampot a small town situated on the Kampong Bay river, which although rather run down in places, nevertheless has a certain character and charm. I stayed in a lovely hotel just a couple of minutes walk from the riverfront, which itself is so picturesque, as it is overlooked by the Bokor mountain, which is situated within the Bokor National Park. Like many places in Cambodia, Kampot's architecture reflects the era of French colonialism, many of the buildings in need of restoration although some had been returned to their former glory. I spent a couple of hours one morning walking around the town and in the afternoon took a trip in a long boat organised by Bart the Boatman, an expat from Belgium, whose knowledge of ... read more

Geo: 10.61, 104.18I really enjoyed Kampot and met some lovely people here, and is famous for it's 'Kampot Pepper' which is a must try. I get booked into the Cozy Elephant but there's a huge wedding on outside which means I actually take my bike through the wedding Marquee. There are around 2000 guests expected in the evening and no doubt the music will be pumping away until late.Anyway I head out for ‘ribs' at one of the western restaurants as they're meant to be amazing, and to be honest they didn't disappoint, BBQd in their own sauce and the place is jumping. I joined Kenny, Rosie, Ian and Andy for dinner and we hung around together for my time in Kampot. We found live music was on in a big stage in the centre of ... read more

HE SAID... We left our homestay (near Sambor Prei Kuk) at 8am and embarked on our long southward journey to Kampot. We pulled into Skuon at 9.30am for petrol and a toilet break. Skuon is jokingly termed Spiderville in Cambodia, and for good reason. The food stalls scattered around the roadside cafe were selling all manner of deep fried spiders and insects. I wasn’t overly hungry, so I opted for a Khmer iced coffee. We jumped back into our minibus and kept heading south, arriving in Phnom Penh at midday. We lunched in the food court on the top floor of Soorya Shopping Centre (the same place I’d purchased my new camera only a week before). After surveying the many food stalls selling a variety of cuisines, we decided to share fried rice with egg and ... read more

Geo: 10.61, 104.18Two very important parts of our lives and what do they have in common? Nothing except they are 'top of mind' in this blog entry. Read on…Kampot is described in our guide book as "…this charming riverside town with its relaxed atmosphere and a run-down French architectural legacy". What I experienced upon arrival was yet another dirty city but I warmed up to it. Feeling worn out from our gastrointestinal flu and disappointed by the discrepancy between the town we thought we were arriving at and the town we experienced, we found a beautiful place to stay on our second day; a quiet garden, a spacious clean room, a DVD player and a wide choice of DVDs and unlimited fruit shakes at our fingertips. I needed to close the doors on Cambodia so in ... read more

A two hour journey sees us get into Kampot at about 10, and then a tuk tuk ride to our accomadation at Ganesha. The place is 4 km out of the centre and I must admit at point on the journey in was thinking of telling the driver to turn the bike around. We were driving along the worst roads I've even seen actually they were more like footpaths and through a small community of very run down shacks....until we came along the drive and the driver pulled into this very well pruned and beautiful garden. We were here and wow what a diffence from the shacks around the corner. We are met by true French owner who does tell the tuk tuk man off for parking on the grass. And walks us into the main ... read more

If we were looking for paradise, we found it on Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island). The days melted into each other and we never wanted to leave. Here is a breakdown of what we did each day to the best of our recollection: Day One We were up early in Phnom Penh to catch a bus to Kep where we caught a boat to Koh Tonsay. We got to Kep at about 12:30 and the next boat left at 1:00 so our timing couldn't have been better. We made a pit-stop at the local market to buy some fruit before making our way to the docks. It was about 1:30 by the time we made it to our new home. As the boat drove up it looked exactly like the photos we had seen on Google images. ... read more
