A month or so ago I wasn’t blogging much because I just didn’t feel I had anything new to share or words of wisdom that might be worth reading. The last three weeks I didn’t blog because I frankly couldn’t find any extra time to make it happen even though I had plenty to say and lots of things are happening. My three critical thinking classes are keeping me very busy. I have a total of about 75 students. I’m gaining greater empathy by the day for teachers at home who are constantly grading and lesson planning and creating evaluations for student learning and managing the classroom and serving on committees and meeting with parent and…………whew. Exhausting. My students are a handful! When I put them in groups to work together they won’t talk but when ... read more
Ieeeeeeek! Ik tierde het uit! Jan, ... read more
Sofia was er ... read more
18th July. We arrived in Sihanoukville at 6am although the bus to Kampot was not until 8am. The bus turned out to be a mini bus and there were at least 5 passengers too many so the 2 hour journey was definately not a comfortable one especially as the roads were half ruined by pot holes caused by the rain. Once in Kampot we settled into our room before exploring the small town. Our day pretty much consisted of relaxing and walking around Kampot although there was not a great deal to do so we spent most of the time in the shade of cafes with cold drinks! 19th July. Today we took a tuktuk to Kep, a 45 minute journey away. Once there we wandered around the crab market and tried some of the fresh ... read more
Cambodia to Vietnam-Ha Tien Border Crossing
Published: July 23rd 2012Asia » Cambodia » South » KampotIt only takes (tongue in cheek) nine hours to get from Kampot, Cambodia to Saigon, Vietnam using the Ha Tien Border crossing. We decided to do it and it was only eighteen USD each. That would save us a trip and another hotel fee in Phnom Penh so we paid the tickets and our ticket agent said a mini bus would pick us up at 9:00 from our guesthouse. 9:10. 9:15. 9:30. Steven rode down on a bike to the agency-problem with the mini bus. She said go back and wait. A car pulls up-the owner of agency. We get in, pick up an Aussie couple in the same situation as we are in, and off we go. The guy was flying-so we thought he must be either trying to make up time, or he is ... read more

Spent the last two days relaxing in Kampot-we leave tomorrow by bus to Saigon. We didn't do too much-that is the great thing about this sleepy little town. We stopped at The Rusty Keyhole for a great lunch and beers to catch up with the owners, who now have two sweet little girls. Real pints and real french fries-what more could we want?! Had some great conversations with an Australian couple, and a Canadian living in India-one of the best part of travel is the conversations with others. Staying at Mea Culpa Guesthouse, and having real, yes real pizza out of a wood fire oven. We rented a motorbike and Steven has been driving me around to shop, find internet cafes, and some photo opportunities-one of the prison. When we post the picture it is easy ... read more
As soon as we arrived in Kampot we knew that we were going to like it. There was a really relaxed feel to this small riverside town and with the sun shining again it was a great place to be. The first thing to do was stroll along the impressive banks of the "Kampot River" - a wide river made of a number of rivers as they near the ocean. We then stretched our legs further and wandered round the nearby houses, shops and stalls - a big mixture of colonial, modern and wooden style buildings. Our first day trip from Kampot took us out into the surrounding countryside. First stop were some salt fields and we learnt about the salt harvesting from the nearby sea water. Next up, fittingly, was the local pepper plantation. Kampot ... read more
S.E. Asia and I were not meant for each other. It doesn't matter really, she has plenty of admirers, I am sure she can do without me. I don't quite know why we don't get along. She has her charms after all, at least, everybody else seems to think so. She seduces the young and the old, with her smile and her beaches, with her parties and her hedonistic ways. But why doesn't she seduce me? Of course there are parts of her I like, but there are too many parts I don't like. Or perhaps it is that I am not on the same wavelengths as her many lovers. I feel I don't fit in here. I am too old for her young group of followers, those in their late teens and early twenties, fresh ... read more
We are sat on our bed in our hotel room in Kampot, Cambodia eating crisps and listening to our Cambodian neighbours pumping out some amped up karaoke. There is a man and a woman and they are dueting and have been doing so for the past hour. They are absolutely shocking. Last night they did the same but thankfully there was a power cut which kept them quiet for a while. They are the type of nutters that make X Factor interesting. So where were we? Ah yes we were in Sumatra and I had the brown apple splatters. After a few days of doing nowt and recuperating we left lake Toba on what was to be one of the more eventful trips of our travels (holiday) to Ubud, Bali. We headed over Lake Toba on ... read more
Day 1 We kicked off the Kings Birthday with a trip away to the coast to the beautiful Kep & Kampot! It was in this region i discovered my favorite flower called peacock flower in english you will see many photos of it attached to this post :) After a 4 hour bus trip we arrived in Kep where we had lunch at a resturant over the water & then we headed to Kampot for our accomodation. Our accomodation was Utopia and Utopia it was indeed, literally on top of the water in quiet surrounds it was so peaceful & beautiful we loved it! We spent the afternoon watching the sunset whilst on tires floating in the water oh the hard life indeed! Day 2 The next day we took a taxi out to Kampong Trach ... read more
